Question why on earth do I have a wire harness on my coin holder?!

I did the steering wheel mod and radio controls this past weekend and saw a harness, an actual electrical connection to the back of the coin holder.

Any one else has this? Whats that supposed to be?

In 4x4s, this connector goes to the 4x4 mode switch.

There is a metal plate in your coin holder. It creates an electric field that helps hold change in the holder on rough roads. Pretty cool gadget they put on there...

I've got the same (I think all 4x2's do), but I thought it was to keep our change warm.

No wire on my coin holder. Some option or other.

That coin holder is a good 'place holder' for something useful. But as a place to put coins, it must be the stupidest place I have ever seen...

I thought it was an electromagnetically induced field that would generate a negative-displacement flux and fuse the metals in the coins, therefore creating a new, high-cost alloy....

That or some engineer was smoking weed when he decided to do this...

The coin holder is really a hole filler on the 4X2's. On the 4X4's the 4-wheel switch goes in that hole. During assembly of the 4X2's the wire harness is put in anyway. This is the wire that is attached to the back of the coin holder. If you want to remove the coin holder for any reason just detach the wire and wrap some friction tape around it and stuff it up in the wiring somewhere.

My 2003 4x2 has this wire also attached to the back of the dash. It is in the same area that a coin holder would be on the newer pickups.

The reason it's attached is to keep it from rattling around behind the dash, and having Ford forum members bad mouthing them for the rattles.

Could the 4x4 on fly switch be purchased and placed where the coin holder is? Just for looks, I really don't like the look of that coin holder.

Let's say hypothetically I have a manual 4x4. Since the harness is already there would I be able to install the electronic shift with relative ease?
