I already have a Magnaflow SI/DO. Which CAI and tuner would best compliment this? I really don't want a LOUD CAI and I want a tuner that will give me the power without having to run 93 octane. Let's hear the opinions!

I'm happy with my K&N FIPK, but the Superchips tuner is a disappointment.
When running the standard tune and 87 octane, I get pinging at high revs.
The shifting has improved and with 89 octane gas most of the pinging disappears.

JDRay, did you go from the premium tune directly to the 87 tune? I did that on my DP and it pinged like heck. I reloaded the stock tune, and then loaded the 87 tune and no problem. Switching tunes seems to leave some of the tune data 'stuck' in the PCM.

I also had a Superchips, and it may have done the same thing.

Worth a shot.

GA FX4,
I get enough better gas mileage on the Premium tune to justify the small difference in cost on my truck. You might find the same.

you should do a search on this, there have been so many arguments about who is the best for what, there really is no best. I prefer Volant intakes because of the sealed filter box that pulls cool air out of the fender, and I prefer BamaChips tuning

Thumbs up Thanks Chris!

Hey Chris,
I did go right from the Hi Octane to economy.
I'll try doing what you mentioned.
And thanks for your threads on installing power windows.
Big help and I used your location for the switches.
Jim

Is the Volant or the K&N loud? What about the XCal tuner? Even with gas prices so high, you still get your money's worth out of the 93 tune??!!

The higher the gas price, the better the premium tune is.

The lower, the more expensive the premium tune is.

Why? Do the math.

The difference in Top to Bottom gas at every station in a 100 mile radius of me is 20 cents exactly. It was 20 cents when gas was 70-90, it was 20 cents when gas was 3.09-3.29.
My increase in mileage from premium is 7 percent. That does not include the better response, better power, just the better gas milage.

This is with a tuner on premium tune, and bears no relationship to non-tuned trucks.

So as long as premium costs less than 7% more, it's actually cheaper to use.

So at 3.00 bucks for regular, and 3.20 for premium I would 'profit' One cent a gallon by running premium.
At 2.00 a gallon regular and 2.20 a gallon premium I would lose 6 cents a gallon by running premium.

At 1.00 a gallon regular and 1.20 a gallon premium I would lose 13 cents a gallon by running premium.

Locally, I am just at the break even point, this week.
Gas has been dropping a lot faster than it went up. It's dropped 60 cents a gallon since September.

The extra power is worth at least a dime a gallon to me, so gas has to drop a lot more before I would ever go back to regular tune.

Any CAI is going to be louder than you stock intake, that’s a given. The best and most versatile hand held tuner is the XCal2. It will hold three different custom tunes of your choice, it data-logs, reads and clears DTC’s on any Ford with OBDII, etc, etc; the state of the art tuner

As SoundPer4mance suggested, you should do a search; there’s mega info and opinions worth reading on both CAI & tuners that will help you make an informed decision
