AF1 install problems

I got my AF1 a few days ago, and last night had a chance to install it. Everything was going smoothly until it was time to put the MAF sensor in the AF1 tube.

And no, this isn't the sensor-doesn't-fit-so-dremel-the-opening thing. The sensor fit perfectly, BUT, the screw holes to secure the thing were way off, and by "way off" I mean you couldn't see the threads in the screw holes thru the MAF sensor "bracket" holes.

So I started looking through the rest of the stuff, and found that the stainless steel filter surround doesn't line up with the holes the grommets go into. The "posts" on the filter surround are further apart than the holes that the grommets go into.

Finally, and also related to the surround, the blue vibration thing was loose, with a rubber washer, and there weren't good instructions on where that goes and how it goes on. I kind of figure the rubber washer goes around the white part of the blue vibration thing, which then goes under the filter surround, but I was unsure.

So, anybody else have these issues? How'd you get around them?

I had to file out the MAS hole in the tube to get the sensor to fit and I had to egg the holes out on the MAS to get them to line up correctly on the tube.

Which tube do you have, new design or old?

Oh no... don't start the new vs. old tube debockle again.

I'd say ship it back... the only issue should be the size the of screw holes, not the actual location of them. Yet another outstanding display of QC by AF1.

Ship it and decide if you want another or a different one altogether. My $0.02

I’m just curious what tube they are shipping now because logically speaking, I should have the old tube since I got mine early. RP and others tested the same tube I got for a couple of weeks before they officially released them.
Might have to bring Columbo in to figure this one out

I talked to Troyer today and ordered one. I asked her which version of the pipe I would be getting. She said it was the pipe pictured above that does not go over the radiator hose. She said that is the "new" design.

my holes in the air dam were further apart too but the postes will still fit in the rubber gromits just got to force it and it fits tight. I figured they designed it that way to hold tight. I got the rubber washer but it was seperate from the blue mounting screw so I didn't put it with the blue mounting screw. I put the rubber washer between the tube and the mounting bracket under the tube. as far as the screws not lineing up I didn't have that problem although the directions did say they sometimes didn't line up due to ford useing differant mass air flow sensors. I would try flipping the sensor over and if it still dosn't come close give airforce one a call to see what you should do.

The above reasons and many other's are why I chose after reading all the threads on this site to buy the K&N kit. Works great, fit without any issues, low noise and great power increase.

I'm pretty sure I can't flip the MAF sensor.

It appears I have that same tube.

Like I said, the sensor fits perfectly, and I thought about egging out the holes, but in my case, it would mean cutting away some of the plastic housing for the MAF sensor, and I'm not real comfortable doing that.

I took some pics last night, and I'll be emailing Troyer today to see what I should do, but I'm leaning toward sending it back.

Yeah, egging and cutting are two different things, unless you know for sure what you’re doing. I do know you can’t flip the MAS; it’s directional. TP’s customer service is good, so hopefully you’ll get squared away fast.

The threads concerning this product go back several months and have had varied opinions. I chose a different product because of the negitive issues concerning the AF1. Doesn't mean anything other than I made a choice.

What was your point with this question, or was it simply a dig or what.

This is ridiculous. For all the time waiting and good money spent, this is what you get. I know when the product is right, it's great, but for alot of folks having these issues, at least posted on this board, seems to be in the majority. I know there are usually, simple fixes, to make it right, but you should not have to go through this. For all the AF1's sold, how long does it take to get it right? I hear they are slammed with orders, well it's time to slow down and adhere to some quality metrics to ensure a quality product out the door with a no hassle and seamless fit. This would save time in the long run from annoying and inconvenient returns. Sorry for you guys to have some of these issues, hence the reason I have waited on this. For 5hp less, I may go to Airraid. Good luck to you all in getting your intakes corrected.

I installed mine last month, on my last 2 trucks I have put 2 MF on, a K&N FIPK, shocks, skidplates, brakes whatever i could do without a lift and this AF1 was frustrating as hell to put on.

Issues: Sensor fit great except the instructions need to state whether to put the brass washers that come on it in between the screw and the plastic or between the plastic and the tube or does it matter???

Black gromments and screws going thru the heat shield-WTF did not line up even close had to install screws at an angle while reaching underneath heatshield to hold grommet so it wouldn't pull out .

The blue spacer no instructions whatsoever yeah i know its the only place you can put it but trying to get all that lined up with the heat shield in the way....

I installed my MF SISO first and i thought that helped low end and pickup quite a bit...I got my AF1 a week later and really can't tell a whole lot performance wise...i think it sucks in so much air that unless you have an xcal2 coming then you don't get the full benefit.

anyway, i had thought about taking it off and going with a stock unit with K &N drop in but i am waiting to see what it will do with the Xcal2. Plus i would hate to sell it to someone else knowing what a PITA it was trying to install it.

But I have had no CEL or any issues so i am happy with that I have run it about 1000 miles so far with it on.
