Cool 17" vs 18" Wheels - 2005 Owners

Has anyone run into any problems getting 17" wheels to work on their truck? I have heard that the 17" wheels from some brands cannot clear the caliper correctly (barrel size in the rim). I current have stock 18" wheels for the FX4, want to go to 17" wheels due to selection of wheels/tires being better. Let me know who has swapped out their 18s for 17s, and problems if any....

My 05'FX4 came with 18" rims.

I tried 325-65-18" Nitto TG's and they rubbed.

I called Discount Tire in Woodstock,GA. bought 17" Chrome rims
and swaped my tires for 295-70-17" Nitto TG's.

These rims have more off-set (NO tire rub)

I'm well pleased with the the wheels, tires and great service. !!

I had 17's but I switched to 18's with 325/65/18 NTG's.

Just be sure you test fit the wheel before you mount a tire on it.

I am currently having big problems with some mud getting in my 18's and then little chunks of gravel get stuck between my rear calipers and rims, this causes the rocks to mill-out my rims. Seeing as how there is so little clearence between the rim and the caliper I would be worried about how the 17's would fit.

I went from the 18 inch FX4 wheels back to the stock 17 inch FX4 wheels and tires. The truck rides better and has more power for towing.

I think it depends on when your truck was built. Trucks built prior to 1/05 were fitted with a smaller caliper. Someone here posted around that time that Centerline was having trouble getting the Crossfire wheel to fit post 1/05 trucks.

My truck came w/17" wheel and I replaced them with another set. My truck was built before 1/05.

Like was stated, fit the wheel first.

My build is 2/05, so I guess the dry fit w/o tire is best bet. Thanks for your help.

I had 18" stock FX4 wheel but I switched to 17" eagle alloys. They fit fine no problems. It also rides smoother and I think makes the truck look bigger....
I am very pleased with the swap!

cavermatt - the 04s have no clearance issues i am aware of, the later 05s have larger brakes I am told. I agree 17s will look nicer, as sidewall height will be greater. Nice looking setup you have.

First of all, I'm no expert but....

The FX4 comes stock with 17" rims, shouldn't have a problem with calipers. Can't see how 17" rims would give the truck any more power than 18" rims, unless you consider the overall diameter of the wheel/tire combo. Any increase in size of the tire will affect perfromance to some extent, that's the price we pay.

As for the rub, from what I have heard on this post, you'll need to install a leveling kit in order to fit those larger tires with no problems, I think anyway. I would do it anyway, for a few hundred buck, it seems well worth it. I'll be doing as soon as I wear out my stock tires as well as going with as big as a tire I can get on my stock rims, which I happen to like.

The actual problem isn't in the diameter of the wheel, but the barrel size behind the center of the wheel. I think I have read wheer about 1/2 the 17" custom wheels won't work. It all comes down to the caliper size being slightly different on later 05 model trucks. All 17" wheels are not alike, except in the actual diameter of the wheel I guess. Dry fitting the wheels w/o tires is only accurate way to tell from what I gather.

I hope mine fit. I ordered a set of procomp 1069 series 17x9s with 5" of backspacing. They are coming with 33" procomps mounted and balanced, so I won't be able to dry fit them. My truck was built 4/05.

They finally changed something in the brakes to address all of the problems, eh? I wonder if the brake pads are the same.

Hey 05STX, there is a dealership that likes to lift these trucks and do alot of aftermarket where I live. Almost all the the wheel and tire combos are procomp and I've seen them on the 04's and 05's. So if I had to guess, I'd say you're going to be alright. Let us know how it works out.
