Got My AF1 Today...Not sure what to think!

Well, I installed my AF1 today and man is this thing loud! As I punched the gas from a dead stop the drone over powered the SISO Magnaflow and at about 2800 rpm this thing resonated so obnoxiously that it vibrated the floor board and rattled the dash. At about 2/3 throttle approaching 3000 rpm the intake howls so loud it's embarrassing. I really like how the magnaflow catback sounds both inside and out but the AF1 is robbing that pleasant sound. I am not to sure about the performance improvements either. Maybe I'm so over taken by the intensity of the intake that I don't pick up on the "seat of the pants" improvements. I will say that the intake at a normal throttle position is hardly noticeable. I am still waiting for the Excalibur 2 from Troyer.

Does anyone have any suggestions for improving the noise issue. I thought I had read a threade a few months back about someone having the same problem and adjusting the mounting position of the filter to eliminate some of the drone.

Any suggestions would be great appreciated. Does anyone have any experience with the volant intake system and its performance/noise levels?

Thanks,

KWR

I hope this isn't supposed to happen, I really would like to hear a sound clip of the difference from stock to the AF1. Hope you get this fixed.

I started this thread awhile back. There are some sound clips embeded in it from my AF1. I'm still having problems with this noice, though I have noticed a "little" improvement after hundreds and hundreds of trial and error adjustments. Call AF1 because when I did I was the first complaint they have had heard regarding this noise. Funny, he actually told me that they would look into it, but with only one complaint to not hold my breath.

Under load it’s going to roar, that’s the nature of the beast. Volant is obviously going to be quieter; it’s enclosed like a stock intake

Folks have reported this and toyed with the placement of the filter on the tube... also be sure to check for leaks - sound like you could have one. Triple check the install and report back!

My original design AF1 tube created the same sound level and resonance that kwr is reporting. At certain RPMs the AF1 was louder than my Magnaflow SIDO and you could not carry on a conversation in the cab without raising your voice to be heard. The "new" tube does not make as much noise and only has a slight resonance at higher RPMs. Night and day difference between them. I installed both tubes in an identical manner, fiter placement, alignment, etc..

I thought that I wanted an Air Force 1 before I kept seeing all of these negative posts about their product. I think I will just stick with my stock intake until I start to see some positive post.

Same here. I realize many more people will post negative comments than positive ones (nature of humans) but while there have been some good reviews of this product, so many people have spoken out about problems it's made me skittish about going this route.

I have the X-Cal2 on order which seems to be the best bang for the buck according to almost everyone. I thought about getting the Stage 1 package from Troyer initially but I think I'll build up slow and see how the CAI threads report back for a while longer.

LRHOGFAN, I don't think that's a true assessment of the AF1 though. There are more than enough people on here withOUT problems/noises/CELs with their AF1, however on the flipside there are quite few new ones with problems as well. Plus I would venture to guess all of the people who have had problems posted about them, while about half who haven't have posted leaving a biased ratio. In the end, these new engines and computers are tempermental aren't they?

I also have the Xcal2 on order because I have only heard positive reviews about the product. As far as the AF1 and others not having problems, I am sure that there are many satisfied customers of the AF1 product. However, there are also quite a few posts from other members of this website that have had not one, but numerous problems from their AF1. The main problems seem to be 1. having to dremel the product for a correct fit 2. loud noise and vibration at WOT 3. knowing that there are 2 different designs out and still receiving the former design 4. multiple CEL's from the PCM.

While I would like to have the extra power provided by this type of product, I am just not sure that it would be worth the headache that it seems to have given some of its customers.

I agree, that's why I took the major PITA route and installed headers because they don't cause those problems. X2 has been sitting in my living room waiting for the header install to be done...tonight is THE NIGHT. I feel you on the intakes though...

I think if you search this forum with 'AF1', you'll find a thread that specifically speaks to the noise issue with the AF1 . I believe the further you move the air filter to the end of the tube, the less noise you'll hear. One forum-member actually used a pipe-expander to flare the filter end of the tube and create an easier way to move the filter right to the end.

I have moved my filter as far as it would go before falling off the intake tube. The noise is very bearable up until WOT, where there is a throaty howl. But I also have the revised tube design. The original tube was really loud, hence the redesigned tube.

Have you detected a performance difference with the exhaust + AF1?

I agree, that has happened with other problems. People who post and say that everything is great are not very popular in threads such as this. I would like to hear the happy people on this because it's not sounding too good right now.

Me too... I thought everything was peachy-keen with AF1 until thread after thread of issues popped up. Now I'm a bit concerned...
