Ok, maybe thumper has my answer. I have ****ty credit, totalled a car about 4 months ago, and it was my fault, so what, shoot me. I am sorry that it happened and learned from my mistake (let's hope). Onto my issue. I found a truck that I was very interested in. Some $@(*&$@ named Maria got on the phone with me, she was great, her boss wasn't. I told them I wanted to pay 23,300 and she tried to sneak a fast one by me and says, so you can offer 23,800. Anyways, we got to talking she was very friendly, maybe she just accidentally mis-noted 500 dollars. I told her that it would be paid for cash, so my credit does not matter. She then mentioned, "Well, I should probably warn you there is a 10% tax (about) in California, and the lowest we can go for you is 24,500 or something around there. She said after that tax it would probably be around 27k, a lot further from 23,800 than I intended on being. I said well thanks for your help Maria, I just can't afford that, have a good day. She was nice, but I am wondering what you all think of that deal they are advertising. She was swearing up and down it was the best truck on their lot and it was their "pride & joy" so to speak. I think they could have went a bit lower than their advertised price of $24.9k, maybe not $23.3k but I should have had it for under 25k if you ask me, which you didn't.

I'd love to hear some smart feedback (please hold the, "you're an arrogant under-aged...blah" comments, this was my first try and I think I handled it well, maybe expected too much?). I will find my black, 4x4 Lariat, (mileage does not matter to me, as long as it's under 50k), sunroof, black/slvr interior for under 25k. I may try again because I am in love with that truck but I swear I will not be made a fool of, I don't have money to spare.

Thanks guys, sorry for the lengthy post.

Two things...

1 I think that if you really want to get a good deal, you have to be prepared to walk away. Leave them your number if you want but don't be afraid to walk away if the deal is not what you want. I have done this several times and they always call. You did that.

2 I have a very good friend who has many years as a motorcyle salesman. He has made it clear to me that the dealers actually want to sell vehicles and in many cases, what the customer offers is just too low for them to turn a profit. Dealers can sell all vehicles below MSRP but at some point the price is below their cost. Before it gets that low, they would rather hold onto the vehicle for a while in hopes of a more affluent buyer.

That's some very helpful advice. I want to call them back, but that's pretty weak on my part. I would say I can offer 25k at the most (after taxes, it's actually 7.75% tax where I live, not 10 where the dealership is located.

I think I will email them back and say you have my number, if you can get that price lower give me a call, thanks for your time Maria. In fact, that's exactly what I'm going to do. I like that truck but it's not unique, plus it's got almost 50k miles on an 04 :X

Thanks a lot rkwfxd.

So you're saying you paid $18,300 off of the sticker price for a BRAND NEW clean titled vehicle? I find this hard to believe.

after trying to trade for a chevy truck before my ford i was more than glad to just take the famiy plan.i'm sure its just the differance in dealers but the chevy dealer offered 3000 less for my trade a 01 z28 chevy no less and from their "math" holding some back on the employee pricing.anyway went back to ford after many years and off the bat they came out with the numbers i was looking for to be a fair deal.showed me what they allowed for my trade kelly blue book trade-in 3000.00 more than chevy dealer.showed msrp on truck, price of truck after family plan and the family plan price minus rebate.off to finance and i have a new truck in under 90 min.i'm sure they made more profit from me than some.but after getting crap treatment from the chevy dealer i would glady pay extra to be treated fair with no hassle.by the way they used a division of gmac to finance my ford through.at this rate chevy is going down fast.i got a better deal trading a chevy for a ford and they even used gm financing.no way chevy should have lost my sale to ford.but i'm glad they did

I also agree that would be taking negotiating to a new level. If so, I want him on my side when I go to by my next car, house, or anything for that matter.

believe what you wish, i [can't/not going to try] force you to believe anything you dont want to-- but im am telling you the 100% truth. in november my mom walked in ordered an 05 250 SD kingranch over 50k sticker, drove out at just over 38k in january at delivery. i was in shock..so as i was going to be graduating, and moving back up to MT for grad school, went in over spring break to the same salesman whom my mom worked with, told him what I wanted, built it on the spot, sent the order. graduated may 12th, drove up there walked in and took it. 10k down, ive got 12k due. theres no sales tax up here, so that keeps a chunk off too i remind you. he was the most helpful dealer I've ever...well, only dealer i've ever worked with as this was my first car purchased new, and second vehicle overall. he worked and worked and worked on the price after I ordered, and what i was putting down. I never asked a price, he just worked with me to make my purchase as reasonable as possible for me he wrote down the firgure on a sheet of paper, spun it around, and said hows that? im 22, if I want another ford, he's got my business hands down. amazing what a bit of respect, responsibility and a lifetime of hardwork get ya.- Justin

I never said I didn't believe you, that is just an incredible deal and I am sure that most people on this website did not get a deal anywhere near what you got. I can guarantee you that I got nowhere close, even with the Ford Family Plan.

oh I understand that, I just dont want to go around saying well I did this and got that and what not just to **** people off and start a he-said she-said. I enjoy trying to help people out on the boards here, and share my experiences with the fellow truck owners. I love my truck, and am extremely grateful for opportunities I've been provided.

Hey Michael,

Hate to break it to you, but 900 is not even a possible number on any of the three bureaus. I run credit reports all day long, trust me. I am not saying Ford didn't commit fraud (and it wasn't Ford, it was your dealer), but I am saying 900 is not even fathomable. I know for a fact the range on Experian, the most commonly used bureau, is 330-830. You can't go any higher that that. Maybe it was in the 800's? Just a thought..

I purchased my new truck outright, but I checked my credit score first, just in case.

I came in at 765 and was told the top number was 800.

Where did 830 come from?

Just for comparison's sake, my truck was MSRP'd @ $37,330 and my A/Z (employee) price was $31,502 + tax & DMV last year. I could have taken an extra $7,000 off in rebates but then my interest rate would have shot up.

Instead I got 0% APR with $0.00 down for 72 months for the exact vehicle that I wanted - minus the unavailable solid yellow.

Of course an 815 score helps but nevertheless, I am completely satisfied with my purchase. Oh and by the way, I quit selling Ford. There was no more money to be made - maybe sometime in the future. I still prefer Fords which is why I'll be buying another Mustang and a Volvo in the near future but I think I'll sell Toyotas for now.
