Anyone pulling heavy 5th wheel campers?

How much can my FX4 (with trailer pkg) tow?

Is this too much.... Glendale Titanium, Dry weight 7996 lbs. Pin weight 1679 lbs?

I pull a travel trailer now ~ 6500lbs with a 800lb tongue weight and weight distribution hitch, but I want to upgrade to a fifth wheel.
Any advice?

What is your wheelbase and gear ratio?
What size wheels?

What is maximum loaded trailer weight?

This is probably what you didn't want to hear, but...

I'd recommend a bigger truck.

I second that opinion. Even if you are within the ratings you will still kill your truck by towing at or very close to full capacity. Once you get to about 75% of the tow rating you should be looking for a more powerful and heavier duty truck.

sad to say but a PSD is the way to go, it may cost more up front but youll save in wear and tear and fuel costs

Sorry... Scab 6.5' box (what ever the wheelbase is.. i forget now)
3.73's
18's

loaded trailer weight ~10100 lbs

You're right Quintin, that's not what I wanted to hear ...... but I thought that would be the answer.

A guy camping beside me had a 04 Dodge Hemi and pulled a 27' Terry ...GVWR 9500lbs, Dry pin weight 1098lbs.... and said it pulled like nothing was behind him.

I somehow doubt what he said.

We never said those Dodge guys were bright. I suppose you could do it, but you'd be at the limits of practicality and safety. A Superduty could get the job done that much easier, that much safer, with a whole lot less wear and tear on the truck.

that sounds a bit heavy for a half ton, even if there is a blue oval on the front of it. that being said, you guys think i would be ok pulling a toy hauler 6-7k loaded?

I never pictured myself to be a camper when I bought my FX4... now I can't picture myself with out my center shift console

I guess the FX4 stays in the driveway and the new fifth wheel stays at the dealer. And some greenbacks stay in my pocket.
It was all my wifes idea anyways..

Maximum trailer weight is 9000 lbs for your truck.
I wouldn't recommend anything shorter than an eight foot
bed for fifth wheel setups. I would also advise buying a diesel for towing
that heavy trailer.

I have pulled a fifth wheel camper, 30" and 10K#s, I have the 5.5' bed. it tows dam good for a half ton, milage didnt even suck that bad. It was only for several hundred miles at a time.

But a bigger truck would have been nice..

Supposed to be a quote thingy!

I call bu!!crap my dad has a 26' fifth wheel GVWR 7200lbs and a 16' fiberglass boat that weighs 2200lbs total weight was 9950lbs for fifth wheel and boat. Driving 100km/hr he got 10.6mpg and he said he sure knew it was there. In his 3/4 ton quadcab HEMI 4+4 with 3.73 gears.

I have a 2004 dutchman sport with a power out living room, and I pull it with my 04 fx4 s/c 6.5' box 3.55 gears trailer tow package, this trailer fits the truck just right empty 4900lbs, gv 10500, I have pulled it full or fresh water, gray water and black water, if your wife is in to the 5vers this is it (my opinion) Last trip was about 1200 mile averaged 11-13 miles per gall, runs down the freeway at 2200 rpms at about 60, in no way does it put extreme loads on the truck. pin weight is 1500 I think. Find a dutchman dealer and check it out. And a freind of mine had a Hemi towed is 5000# tt to yellowstone from Mn .. Had a Hemi
