Towing with a Lifted truck
Towing with a Lifted truck
Hey everyone, I am be getting a Boat here pretty soon so i wanted to figure out how much my truck could tow as it is..
Its an 05 fx4 screw with the 5.4, 3.73, 17", tow package so it was rated at 9200lbs.
Anyways i am now running 35"s and a lift kit. I was looking at the ratings and it said if you have 18" wheels then subtract 500lbs from the rating, so i figured since my new wheels are 4" taller than my old tires i would subtract 2000lbs correct?
I know that is still not it though do to the weight of the tires and such,
So should i go weight my truck to find out how much it weights, then add 2000lbs to my truck weigth and subtract that from the GCWR of 15000 that my truck is rated for?
So say if my truck weight in at 6600lbs for example then i could tow 6400lbs?
Or is my thinking totally off?
The boat we are looking at is #3900 Dry weight plus #1250 for the tandem axle trailer, gas, gear, 4 people, so i figure i am looking at about #6000.

I'm sure there are experts here who can answer this but your theory about 4" taller so 4x 500 just sounds way off. I don't think there is a coorelation between 1" and 500 pounds but who knows maybe there is. Just doesn't sound plausible.
I would think you'd have no problems with that weight.

I tow a toybox with my truck up the cajon pass in cali. and as long as i have momentum im good to go. I pull it on regular freeways no problem. I think it weights like 7000 pounds or something like that. Here is a pic of what i have.

Yeah man ill take a pic of it and get back to you monday. Im goin to the river this weekend and wont have a computer untill monday. I would right now but i didnt drive to work today and i always have my camera in my truck to. LOL
the main thing you need to consider is the fact that your effective gear ratio is totally different due to the oversized tires. This is the biggest thing that will effect wear on your truck and towing capacity.
Usually what is safe and comfortable to tow is a good bit less than what your ratings say you can tow.

^ Yep, i totally understand that, I was just hoping someone here could enlighten me about how much my lowered effective gear ratio actully effects me in this case..
So this load would normally be a good bit less than what the ratings say but how would i be now? would i be maxing out my truck to haul this up some grades?
thanks,

Gears or ratio effect the shift point speeds and ramp time ... it doesn't effect the highway performance/power other than positioning. with 35's and 3.73's you'll probably seldom use 4th with 6klb loads. I changed gears and ... well, gears are expensive and if really/actually needed (for towing) ... I'd recomend a different truck with a stronger tranny.
A good towing rule of thumb is 20% less than mfg specs. I pushed that envelope to the 100% area for awhile ... added some helper mods and IMO was a waste of my money. Would have been great if my tranny could take it!
I recomend getting a scangauge and a tranny gauge to keep tabs on things ... The gauges let me watch my tranny degrade in effectiveness ever so slightly pull after pull after pull.

Sorry guys. I was on vacation. Thumper here is a pic of my exhaust.

aquaholic5.4 i got a deal through my buddy i only paid like 1200 for the lift and coilovers. But i would have paid like 1200 for the lift and another 1200 for the coilovers. Installation was like 600 bucks i think. Its a awesome lift i love it. I also dont recommend getting the coilspacer if you have the extra cash deffinetly get the coilovers, they are sweet and look bitchen. Here is a pic of this last weekend. Dont recommend stopping in sand either.
LOL.
