You honestly won't see too much of a gain on that engine. I dealt with it in my last truck. The heavier the truck is the less you'll notice a horsepower gain also. But, you can do a few things to really improve the feel of your vehicle.

The mods I would do would be a tuner or a chip first. You'll see significant improvement both with power and in the transmission shifts. It really woke my truck up in 2nd gear. 1st didn't pull but it kept pulling hard through 2nd. I had a friend run me right before and after the install to test.

I'd consider a cat-back exhaust next. It improved my 1/4 mile times a consitant .2 tenths of a 2nd on my last truck. I'd recommend a Magnaflow setup.

Now, I didn't notice much with my intake other than it added a nice sucking sound and whistle to my engine bay area. I think it's more in people's minds when they say they can feel an increase in the seat of their pants. Maybe on a supercharged engine (possibly on the new 5.4 3v as I don't know much about them) but not on a NA 4.6l engine. A 5 or 6hp gain will be hard to feel on a 3 ton truck.

I would consider Troyer's Electric fans. Both of them on they're suppose to do more than double the airflow than the stock fans. I noticed a significant improvement in my A/C's cooling ability when it was sitting still too. They really work well. Well worth them both in cost and installation work.

I also did underdrive pulleys at the same time when I did E-fans and I could tell a nice pickup from a stop in my truck. Also started getting around 1mpg better in the city driving.

You'll be hard pressed to see Hemi power out of the NA 4.6l engine. You can probably get it to compare to a stock 5.4l motor though. The Hemi is a bigger motor.

Don't get discouraged, I have an xl with the 4.6 and have added a K&N Air charger and dual exhaust and am very happy with the power gains. Now it is still a little slow from a dead stop but a tuner will take care of that. I say mod away if you have the money, or just trade it in on a new truck which will cost a heck of a lot more.

Consider gears. Changing it to 4.31 or even 4.56 gears will make it much quicker. Tuner and exhaust help on 4.6, air intake, slightly.
Gears are the most power increase for the buck. If you are running oversize tires, you really need the gears anyway.

Don't mean to get you disappointed in the truck. The 4.6L engine Ford just doesn't do much to it when they stick it in these trucks. The one that comes in the mustangs does 300hp. The one in the truck does 230 I believe. It's still a good engine and it'll take one heck of a beating before it gives out on your. I put mine through a really good beating and it barely flinched.

I took my 4.6l engine from a 17.4 in the 1/4 mile down the a 14.5. It just needs a little more love than the 5.4l engine and a 10lb bottle in the bed In fact, I got everything you need sitting in a box right here.

Do the basic mods though like Tuner, Cat-Back Exhaust (trust me, just sticking a muffler in there doesn't do much), and Electric Fans. See how you like it. If it's feeling good, then for not much more money you can get some underdrive pulleys on there and then see about getting Gears if you have something wimpy in there. I went from 3.08s to 3.73s and you can tell a difference.

I have actually been very happy with the power mine has, but you have to judge it for what it is, and what you are expecting it to pull, this is a very heavy truck.

I have an 05 XL Reg Cab. I have added AF1 intake, Troyer Tuned X-Cal, Magnaflow SIDO, and Yukon 4.30 Gearing. The power over stock is tremendous. All my friends drive Silverado Z71's and I can kill them in a 1/4 mile even with my big BFGtires. We hooked mine bumper to bumper with one of the Silverados and I could pull him as long as he didn't use 4WD( Mine is 2wd).

I also tow a 5200lb travel trailer with my F150 and it does really well, much better than my wife's Tahoe w/5.3 lt. engine.

The gearing makes all the difference, and the gas mileage change is not even noticable. I get 16 city and 18~19 Highway.
