Talking AF1 and CEL, Holy Crap!! (Easy RP)

So I finally got the CEL today 182 miles.

So from what I understand I need to go to Mike to have my custom tunes "tweaked". Is this correct? See I do use the search feature!!!

Anyhow I know that I can clear it in the meantime with the Xcalibrator by reflashing the PCM and this will clear the codes and all adaptive strategy.

I have a bigger question. Since I have to have the Tunes tweaked to deal with this (if I am reading everything correctly) and I have to take it into the dealership to have it serviced, wouldn't there be a posability of throwing a CEL with the stock tune? (this came to me in a dream, OK a BAD dream)

I will call Mike in the morning and get things straightened out but thought I would post to all the experts thus far...

from what I have read. most people that solved this issue solved it by resetting the codes every time they occured and then eventually they stopped occureing. I guess the computer addapted to the new fuel air mixture.

I had the same experience... The CEL came on about 18 miles after installing the AF1 and a full PCM reset, which I later found out isn't advised. I called TP and Anita mentioned the fact the PCM had to 'relearn' the air-fuel mix with the AF1 installed. She said it could a couple of weeks/200 miles or so. Well, I took the truck on a good 150 mile trip and sure enough, the CEL went away.

Well, about a week ago, I decided to really get on the truck and do a WOT run; the CEL popped back on! Since then, the truck has been running in a less than optimal mode (rough idle, occassional hard start, etc.). When I combine this with the fact I had to port the MFS socket on the AF1's stainless tube because the mass airflow sensor would not fit (the socket was not properly machined by AF1), I'm really not at all satisfied with the product. Yet, I see others posting AF1 results on their "butt" dynos; the reviews are just nothing short of glowing!

What's kind of funny is it took almost a year for TP and AF1 to R&D the intake the 5.4 3 valve. When it was released, the reviews said no CELs and no lean conditions.

Anita @ TP said they would exchange the AF1 for the Air Raid intake, but I'm not sure that's way to go either. I do plan on doing a Superchips Tuner and exhaust, so I'd like the air intake to work out, but a CEL is there for a reason. It's pretty scarey to see the engine dummy light on your $35k+ truck. I know folks are saying it's not really a lean condition, but frankly, I'm wondering if there really is a problem.

ive got the volant with no problems, but i think this CEL will pop up no matter which intake, i remember the first gen volant had a lot of problems throwing the same code. i guess the maf is just not designed for any other intake. volant attributed the problem to air coming around the bend in the tube and sticking to the wall opposite the MAF, so it wasnt all being read, hence the lean condition. their fix was to put a small "hump" in the tube near the MAF on the opposite side, to kick the air back to the MAF. i dont know if this has fixed anything or not, but i have the first gen and have never had any problems

Hey SoundPer4mance, I love the driving lights in the "GAP." Did you cut/grind the mount tabs off of the plastic cowling? How did you fasten the light mount to the truck? I know there's some steel plating behind the honeycomb inserts, but it's dimpled and doesn't seem to lend itself well to this purpose.

haha, i just ripped off those 2 little honeycomb pieces, and the brackets are actually mounted on the bottom of the lights, to the plastic valance inside the lower bumper. im suprised how sturdy that plastic is, no highway jiggle or anything, they are rock solid. i dont like the blue though, im trying to find some with clear lenses.

well im not saying it isnt something to worry about, it is a genuine issue as running too lean can damage the engine. as to what you can do, im not really sure, youll have to take it up with customer service, see what they say, or tech support with whoever the company is. i know volant is very helpful. its a tough spot to be in!!

After resetting my PCM my CEL hasn't come back on yet. It's been about 400 miles with various types of driving.

I installed my Airforce One may 14th. That’s been 40 days today and approximately 500 miles or so and I’m guessing about 100 plus drive cycles. So far, no CEL but I can’t help being apprehensive when I read about others having problems. I got an early build date too, 9-03. I know if were setting a CEL I’d be freaking.

Last week I disconnected the battery for 20 minutes to clear out the adaptive strategy because I felt like it was getting lazy on me. When I started it up it ran like crap for a few minutes but then it smooth out. I let it idle until it reached operating temperature and so far so good.

I know for sure my CEL light comes on though because I forgot to tighten my gas cap once and it took about four days before it went out.

Hopefully Mike will get everything squared away quick for you guys so you can enjoy your new mod without worrying about the dam CEL

bubbadoo98, I had to take the file to the MAS hole and square off the corners so it would fit too. Not what I expected, I’ll tell you that. But all’s well that ends well I guess

What's so bizarre is some of us never see the CEL and others have a very similar CEL condition. If I reset the PCM, I give it 18 - 20 miles before the CEL is thrown. Time and time again.

If you read the related threads on this excellent forum, Mike Troyer did the data capture using a programmer and verified that the CEL was in fact not a lean condition. It was however, outside of the usual mixture map, causing the PCM to throw the CEL. The resoning for the resolution of the CEL is once the PCM learns the new scale, the map is adjusted to reflect the AF1 characteristics.

I'm not sure... a lean condition is a lean condition. I don't think 500 miles with the CEL thrown will ruin the engine, but it can't be good.

I reflashed the CAN with the 93 Octane tune and it cleared the code. I also have the "early 9/03 build" but I didn't have to do anything for the MAF to fit. Most of the posts I have been seeing have attributed the CEL code to something close to idle or just cruising. Mine did occur during a "WOT" episode that my truck was experiencing at the time. (I have size 14 feet and was wearing boots at the time)

I will talk to Mike tomorrow and see what is up, in the mean time I may just make sure the gas cap is on tight enough...
