What is the buttom behind the rear view mirror?

I've been going through my manul trying to figure it out, but can't.

Behind the mirror on my 05 FX4 Scab, there is a little black box, about half the size of a pack of cigarettes. And there is a bottom on the top driverside of it. If I hit the button, doesn't seem to do anything. I even tried holding it in for a while. I would think it has something to do with mirror, compass, or auto head lights. But I can't find anything, and pressing it doesn't seem to do anything.

Any ideas??

Its the sensor electrical box for the auto dimming mirror. The sensor for the auto headlights is in the flashing red light bubble on top left of dash.

It's your compas sensor. That button will alter your magnetic deviation so it's reporting the correct direction.

Ford OnStar

That's the button for the new Ford version of OnStar. For 05 they added just the button. In about 09 you will be able to actually talk to someone and get some help. Pretty slick huh?

nice, so the button is how I would recalibrate the sensor? Don't have the old manual handy, at least I know what the button is.

Thanks guys.

I've wondered this myself. Yes most of us know its the compass but what exactly does the button do? There is nothing I can find in the manual that discusses it. The only thing I can find about magnetic zones relates to the Homelink, not the compass sensor on the mirror.

It must just be a reset.

Well, since we have all sorts of answers here:

That button should be pushed only when Batman should come out of his Bat Cave and get me something for my wife just incase I forgot.

Oh, chances are that I would forget to push the button anyway and...nevermind...that button doesn't mean anything...

Thats wierd. On the Lariats you change the compass zone you are in by using the buttons on the message center per the manual yet mine has that mirror button also. Wheres mythbusters when we need em!
