Bad Vibration - need help

Hi All

Well I've heard of some of the vibration issues with the '04 F150 but the vibration I have with my 4x4 Lariat has got me and the dealership scratching our heads.

Driving along at around 50 mph all seems fine for a mile or two, than the vibration starts, very faint at first and getting progressively worse, so bad that the truck is undriveable I pull over to the side of the road for a second and sometime it would clear and sometimes not.

The dealership has - checked the emergency brake
for sticking
- checked the limited slip rear,
added a different grade of lube.

- rebalanced all tires

This week I noticed that when stopped on a slight incline and I take foot of the brake the truck rolls backwards, so now I am thinking torque converter or tranny problems.

What do you guys think I need all the help I can get.

rolling backwards when stopped on a hill is normal, don't worry about that.

These are total wild guesses, but if you've exhausted every other possibility, i guess that's what you're looking for.

The problem is intermittent, sometimes stopping fixes it, other times it doesn't, so that rules out something like a driveshaft, etc. ('normal' vibration causes)

so, these are wild guesses...

you are probably having cold weather still up there in CA, perhaps ice/snow is melting and then refreezing throwing wheels out of balance.

Perhaps you have a leak in your vaccuum lines and your hubs are floating between being locked/unlocked

perhaps it is a transfer case issue?

just a couple of guesses...

well I am not sure if your problem is the same as mine, but my truck is in the shop now to get fixed. The vibration would come on subtle from the back end and get gradually worse untill it gets to teeth rattle shake. The problem they told me over the phone was the carrier bearing, along with the rear clutch pack of the limited slip I wont know exactly what is wrong untill I pick it up tomorrow, and then I will post the full investigation.

Any new news to the intermittent vibration problem. I have the same thing going on. So far the dealership has re-balanced the tires.

Back in the shop now.

Have the ford mechanics been able to duplicate your vibration problem? I get this vibration maybe once to maybe 5 times a month. When the vibration starts it vibrates until I stop. I make a stop at the light then start moving again it does not come back. I have also tried putting it in neutral while the vibration is happening and it still vibrates.

This is strange as hell. Anyway I just hope that the ford mechanic can duplicate this while he is driving it back and forth to work.

Good luck, I will let you know if I find anything out on my truck.

Thanks,

Dustin

Hope I do this right... This is my first post...

Started getting the same violent vibe after having the startup from stop shudder described in other threads addressed via a clutch pack replacement (5.4L LS).

Had it in the shop last week and of course it wouldn't act up for the tech. Got it back and the vibe was back this morning. Same deal as others report: Starts out as a rumble in the rear end, progresses to the point that it is almost undriveable, then goes away in a few minutes. Sometimes goes away after a stop, but not always...

Wondering if others experiencing this problem have had the clutch-packs replaced.

Love the truck, but had similar problems with a 2002 Explorer. Only had it 21,000 miles and it was in the shop 6 times for warranty work. Guess this will teach me to buy a new-model year product...

Another wild a__ guess. How about air pressure in both rear tires. Is it the same? Do both rear tires have the same rolling circumference? If not, then maybe this could generate some windup causing the clutches to heat up and start shuddering.

Thanks for the reply, but just had the tires rotated, balanced and pressures checked when it was in for 6000 mile service last week... Ford even replaced the two front rims ( warped ) to try and address the highway speed (70 MPH ) vibe also discussed in other threads.

Still get the violent vibe.

Judging by the amount of people who have this vibration (me being one of them) you would thing Ford has a handle on it .
My dealer keeps telling me Ford has nothing on their data base, Something has to come up soon
