Hey the Powerstroke Supercrew, 6.5 ft box, now that is a lot of TRUCK. Trouble is I have a hard enough time justifying a full size pick-up as it is, with gas prices going up every month and most of my driving these days is commuting to work. When the weather gets bad though, there is no better rig than a full size pick-up in 4 high to get you there. Also to own a truck gives me a certain freedom to take on jobs like building things and hauling toys around.
I really like this FX4 Flareside, the only option I did not get is the sliding rear window. Instead I chose the rear window defroster which also means the deluxe mirrors are heated. If the engine didn’t make this taping noise I’d make the truck mine.

That seems to be the Dealer's Default Answer to everything.

I have been told that 2 out of the 3 times! I am wise to their little game now, the next time they tell me that.....it aint gonna be pretty!!

engine noise

cam phasers and fuel rails kinda make it sound like a diesel. nothing to worry about, i'd guess.

In an effort to understand this engine tapping noise better, I tried an experiment. On a quite road with, truck warm, accessories off, truck in drive, and the brake pedal applied. Without touching the throttle I hear a cycling sound like a tap once every firing order. Now if I bring the RPM up just slightly, the sound is still there, but if I bring the RPM up a slight bit more, suddenly the sound disappears. The RPM is still below 1000.
Other than possibly a manifold leak, it would seem this noise is related to the cams, valve train, or anything downstream, which includes fuel injection.
I’ve been driving an F150 with a 5.4 Triton for the past eight years. That truck had 341,000 km (214,000 miles) on it when I smashed it up. This new 3v 5.4 Triton is essentially the same motor, is it not? I would expect that it should sound similar and for the most part it does. Actually this one growls more, I like it.
