Good calculations dz but I work at a dealer and get the labor free ( buy the lube kid a case of beer or lunch now and then.) Get the oil and filter from Pep Boys for 37 bucks. 30000K yr..change every 3k = 10 changes at 37 bucks=370 dollars. At 5000 mile changes=6 times a year=222 bucks. $150 year is no big deal to me but I may try the 5k interval and see what the oil looks like. Take er easy..

Is any body anywhere aware of any oil related engine failures where the oil was changed at 5,000 mile intervals? I've had valve covers and oil pans off (due to leaking gaskets or accident damage) on vehicles with 150,000+ miles and the inside of the engines were as clean as new with no signs of sludge or wear.

Hollahluya!!! Somebody talkin' sense. 3K is for suckers. And don't go off what the oil 'looks' like, send it off to a lab to get it tested. I've read research papers that ran a car for 18K before changing the oil. Lab said it was still good. My bimmer takes oil every 15k. If you have free labor and dirt cheap prices available to you, great... but your still wasting oil and performing totally unneeded maintanence!

I agree. My Ford manual says every 5000 miles. That's when I change it. The manual on my wife's Camry says every 7500 miles. That's when I change it. Niether vehicle is low on oil before its changed.

I change mine every 5K no need to do it any sooner than that. Hell my Jaguar is every 10K per dealer. I think it should be 5K but they pay for it.

I read the same paper, DZ. In the Jetta that I traded in, I changed the oil every 10k with a filter change every 5k. Just topped it off with the filter change and all was good.

'Cuz modern oil in modern engines last much longer than the crap of the past. Use Mobil1 and you can go even longer.... RTFM and you'll see not even Ford says replace every 3k. The 3k myth was once valid, and now oil makers are trying to cling to it and brainwash us into 3k changes...

So If I am pounding out over 3000 miles every other month, it wont hurt to change every 5000?

Nope. Highway miles are easier on engines than stop & go. You'd be A-OK with 5k changes... I'm curious what your manual says, though... last F150 I had was a '97, and it got its Mobil1 every 5K.
