abs light on & engine fail safe message

I have 16000 miles on my 04 screw. got in started it up and the abs light was on. figured that was the worse of it, i don't have abs and would have to get it in to the dealer this week. drove a mile and she starts bucking and really running like crap and the engine failsafe message comes on. when i shut the truck down and restart the abs light is on, however the engine fail safe message is not there until i drive it a mile or so. this past week i noticed the idle when in park was up and down, kind of surging. also the throttle lag that was there a little was there a lot.

my question is has any one else experienced this and what should i expect at the dealer? they usually try the "we never saw that before line." i tried the search and did not come up with much.

up till now its been a great truck. especially for a first model year.

thanks.

Probably not to the degree your describing. Just take it to your dealer and get it fixed. Even if they haven't seen this before, they still need to troubleshoot and fix the problem.

I did have the ABS light come on at about 10,000 miles. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the front ABS sensor. No problems since.
Sorry, I have no experence with the engine fail safe problem. I am sure the dealer will connect your truck to the computer and diagnose the problem.
Good Luck!

projetmech,

I had the exact same problem with my 04 Supercrew at 9000 miles. They reflashed the pcm with the latest version at the time and I never seen the problem again. I traded the truck in Dec of 04 with 30000 miles. So you should be ok once the pcm is reflashed

I had a shorted sensor that caused not only the fail safe mode but the brakes would only pulse when you tried to stop.

Dealer had me on the road within a couple of hours. No problems since.

Yes I did have the abs light on. The abs light would come on first then 3 or 4 seconds later the engine would go to fail safe. I would then stop turn the engine off then restart and drive about ten miles and it would start the process over again.

i finally got a hold of a service writer and they tell me that they can schedule an appointment on feb 23. it is feb 14th. are they nuts? of course the service manager is unavailable. left a voice mail and no call back after a half hour. any body got the number to a person at ford? list price of $42,000.00 on a pickup and they say to wait for 10 days before i can get it in!

that is staight up bullshi**! I have had the same problem with my truck. the front ABS cable had to be replaced, and they had to order a new PCM, cause somehow it fried itself, and a reflash would not work. The dealership had my truck for over a week, and worst of all they didnt even wash it for me when i picked it up. you should raise hell over there if they're gonna make you wait that long to fix it. if i were you i would go to the dealership, and park it right in the middle of the showroom for everyone to see. well anyways, good luck with your truck, i hope it doesn't take too long to fix

abs light was on for the rear sensor which they replaced.

engine fail safe on - they replaced the throttle body.

its a long story about what went on in order to get my truck into the dealer. they pissed me off to no end. had to do alot of yelling to get this done. i got their attention when i said i was going to buy a mustang gt convertible when they come out, but i would buy it somewhere else.

really amazes me how little the service writers and managers know about the vehicles. i thought that it was only the sales people that didnt have a clue.

i asked about the tsb that covers the rolling idle on start up due to the fan clutch and he didnt have a clue. i gave him the tsb number and got a "duh, i dont think that affects your vehicle". doesnt matter that on a cold morning i hear exactly what is described in the tsb.

i think im going to ebay and find an old ford pick up with a carb and points. screw this modern technology. a set of headers some straight pipes and it will be just as quick as my 04.

My failsafe light came on within a few hundred miles of purchasing the truck (now has 14250 miles). Took it to the dealer and they reinstalled the computer programming since Ford had made some udates to correct this issue.

well, i get in my truck to come to work this morning and theres the abs light again. take it back to the dealer and they say they will get right on it and i can wait. after 25 minutes and drawing attention to the fact that the truck is still out front they then move it around the back. there it sits for another 10 minutes. they get it in and check codes and say its a dirty connector. they clean the connector and clear the codes. truck didnt even make it to the front of the building and pops the light on again. that tooke 3 hours to get to that point. remember they said it would be a few minutes. now they have it or so they say narrowed down to the abs module. didnt have one in stock though. its on order for maybe tomorrow.

they say it is driveable so i took it with me and used a 1/4 tank of gas to go 50 miles. i wonder what thats all about.

i think the guys that actually work on the trucks are pretty good guys. its the boneheads in the office that are screwed up. the impression i get is that they hate their jobs cause they have to lie to the customers and get caught all the time. they would love to quit but like the rest of us they have bills to pay and unfortunately they dont know how to do anything else, especially something that would require work. i know a service writer that works a jap dealership he doesnt have a clue.

well, they tell me to bring the truck in at 1130 and it will be done by 200. at 145 i stop and its in the same spot that i left it. go in and tell them that and they act all surprised. they jump in and take it around and tell me it should take 20 minutes and they will call. an hour later i go by and he is just coming back from road testing.

i sure hope this is the end of it.

the service depatment at this dealer SUCKS. first and last truck i will ever buy there. this was a relatively simple stuff. i cant even imagine something more complex like a brake job.
