Thumbs up How bad or good is the Depreciation???

Hey guys!

I'm curious, do the f150's have a bad depreciation or a good one?? A freind of mine has a 04 Nissan Titan, he told me he choose Nissan over the Ford due to when he sells it he will have something that's worth money, unlike Ford F150??? Same thing with a guy from work who has a 04 Dodge Ram, he said the f150's are worth crap after 4 or 5 years and are not recomended by consumer reports, who rank the f150 as the worst u can get?? WTF??

Whats with these guys on how they think? Or are they right about everything they said?? I thought the f150 ranks near the top..I doubt that Peace of Junk Titan my freind has is worth more then mine!

Go to KBB.com or grab a N.A.D.A. blue book and see for yourself. I won't argue the issue because all I have is an opinion (and of course MY opinion is correct).

What your friends are talking about (I think) is the Consumer Reports "predicted reliability" index.

They are correct that they are predicting the four wheel drive F150 will have much worse reliability than the Dodge or Nissan. By their own admission that is based on similar vehicles from the manufacturer from the prior 3 years on new models (the Nissan and F150). The Nissan and Dodge score average on reliability.

Their blurb on why the reliabilty of the 4wd model is poor is "First-year reliability of the 4WD version is below average, due mostly to repeated problems with the drive system".

Not sure what thats about. I have only heard of one transfer case failure here.?

Ironically, if you look at the "Reliabilty History" breakdown for the F150, all sections are rated "Excellent" (the highest rating) with the single exception of body integrity which is rated "Very Good". Go figure how the "Poor" summary was condensed from that.

The 2WD F150 is rated highest second only to the Tundra.

The Titan scores very high on customer satisfaction, The F150 scores high and the Dodge scores average.

As with any opinion of any magazine, I take what I read with a grain of salt regardless of the product.

My 04' MSRP was $39,440. If I were to sell or trade it now KBB say's $33,000. retail,$30,000 what you would pay at a dealer and $ 26,995 trade in.(I paid $29,330.)

KBB prices are always high.

If you are worried about resale before you even buy the truck, maybe you should look at a used one instead.

I have taken my Blazing Yellow 04 F150 STX 4.6 2WD to three different dealerships.

I have the following options:

Sliding Rear Window
Carpet
36 Gallon Gas Tank
Trailer Tow
XLT Running Boards
265/70/17 Terra Grapplers
Bed Mat

The KBB showed the value in the upper 19k and very close to 20k if I remember correctly. I even based the condition of the truck as good, not excellent. Even though it is excellent.

Out of the three dealerships the lowest trade in value I got was 14k and the highest was 15k. After I got up from the floor, I ran out of the dealership screaming and slammed my head on the concrete sidewalk. Two of the bids came from Ford dealers and the third one came from a Chevrolet. The highest bid came from the Chevrolet dealership.

Not only has my truck been in the shop constantly due to the vibration, I'm so upside down in it I will own it forever. Good grief I'm sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Don't put to much into the KBB values. Every weekend in the New Braunfels area, dealerships sell 05 STX's for $ 18,500.00 which makes mine a model year old and almost worthless.

See ya, I'm gonna go throw up!

Part of the bigger drop on the F150 in comparison to others is the sheer number of trucks available. I've never really concerned myself with depreciation because I keep my vehicles until they drop and by then their value is pretty much fully depreciated. If you keep your truck longer than 5 years don't let it worry you too much.

And Consumer reports is so biased toward the Japanese vehicles that I don't bother reading them anymore.

Who'd take a Tundra of an F150....crazy I tell you crazy.

KBB lists my truck's value several thousand more than I paid for it new. Large rebates and discounts have skewed the true value of the trucks. Around here a 4X2 is very hard to sell, especially this time of year.

You are playing a game you will never win. You usually won't break even on trade in until 3 years and that's if you don't put too many miles on it. When you buy a vehicle of any kind, you may as well lay 20-30K cash on the table and set fire to it.

The best trade in I got was last week on a fully loaded Super Duty diesel CC FX4, with every option you could get on one. I paid $37500 for it brand new in 2003, trade in 17 months later with 35000 miles I got $29000, with the sales tax I saved it was like getting $31,000.
