Question putting in a moonroof

anyone know if this is possible and how much it would cost

it is a $995 option on the truck...is that how much it would cost me to go through the dealer or would it be more than that?

Should I do it through Ford or through an aftermarket (if there is one out there)?

Thanks in advance

Ford or aftermarket is the same thing. If you have it done at the dealership they have another source come in to do it.

I personally think all of those aftermarket sun/moon roofs look terrible and are prone to leaking.

it would be much more than factory cost.

Question is, do you want full retracting moonroof (solid piece of truck that recedes into the roof) or a sunroof (clear glass that does not recede into the truck roof)

Iwould say that installing a power moonroof after the fact isnt worh the money.

i would be wanting the sunroof...I just knew ford called it a moonroof on the option list

I doesn't need recede into the truck, going back over the roofline would be fine

I have had friends that have good luck and bad luck with installing one after the fact...in that some leak and some don't

was kind of hoping if I bought the ford part and had the dealer put it in that i would end up with a 'good' no leak sunroof

if you opt fot eh sunroof that just pivots up and down with a manual removal setup, you can have one installed for a couple hundred, all in.

Spend the bucks on the factory installed moonroof, you will be glad you did. And also get the power rear glass option, really sets up a nice air flow with the moonroof and rear glass opened up.

when they cut a sunroof in after the car was built it ends up cutting roof beams

Plus Ford does not cover you if it starts to rust around the cut out of the sun roof. If it leaks you have no warranty. And cutting beams in the roof is not a good idea! Especially if you get in an accident. Factory installs are the best.

I can't speak specifically of F-150's, but normally when a car is designed for a sunroof the sheet metal and roof framing is designed to accomodate it.

Aftermarket sunroofs usually cut right through the roof supports and instead of sheetmetal that accomondates a nice seal they have a seal that is placed over the metal.

i don't have any idea what you are saying here...

it will work b/c it was built for sunroof or it won't b/c of the sheetmetal and seal??

i can't believe ford would have two setups for F150 roofs - i would think the roof supports are out of the way for the sunroof, due to it being an option

Don't be so sure.

Again, I've never seen under the headliner of a new F-150, but I can tell you I worked briefly at a place that did sunroof installs for the local dealership and watched them sawsall right through the roof supports of everything from new Maximas to Altimas to whatever...and those come with sunroof options as well.

Factory or aftermarket, I never saw the sense in cutting a hole in a perfectly good roof. Although I agree, if you're dead set on a sunroof (moonroof, whatever), I'd search around for a truck that had that option from the factory.
