Stock Speaker

I just recently upgraded to a pioneer head unit. I am about to install the pioneer tuner for xm and the antenna. My stereo installation guys seem very fair and honest and do great work but I was wondering if anybody had ideas were to mount the antenna and tuner. It is not the commander that gets installed in the ashtray. Also, my stereo guys said that the stock spaeakers were adequate. Should I replace the speakers I have a bazooka tube in the back and the baee sounds ok but the speakers to me aare a little week.

If I were installing it I would install the xm "brain" box securely in the cavity behind the radio (you could fit a case of beer back there) I would also install the xm magnetic antenna up on the roof just in front of the third brake light, and I would run (and sillcone seal) the antenna wire inside through the third brake light opening.

The antenna needs to "see" the satellite and the roof is the best place for that to happen.

Enjoy your XM, I enjoy mine everyday

Merry Christmas!

What do you think about the stock speakers. I was thinking of replacing them with infinity. Will it make a big difference?

Aftermarket speakers will generally be clearer and hopefully will be more efficient (A little louder) You need to listen to a bunch in the showroom yourself, and find the one that your ears like best.

If after replacing the speakers, the bass still drowns out the interior speakers, then you can always add an amp or turn down the bass a bit. The nice thing about car audio is that you can do it in stages.

You have to take the door panels off.

For the front speakers, you just have to pop the grill off that is around the speaker. There is a small notch on the side of them so that you can get a pry tool in there if you need to. I was able to just pull towards me and they came right off. For rear speaker access, you have to remove the entire panel because the grills are part of the panel. Here are the instructions on how to do that. It is pretty much the same for the s-crew and the s-cab.

I replaced my stock speakers with 6x8 Infinity speakers. Just take it easy when removing the speaker grill in the front doors. The tabs have a tendancy to break easily. I ended up having to order a new grill because I broke so many of the tabs. Oh well, live and learn and pass it along.

i just installed a new kenwood radio with a sirius tuner and i had the same problem; where to mount the tuner. I mounted the tuner to the underside of the rear seat (drivers side). There is a metal bar that runs under the seat (i have a scab) and is covered with the seat material. I had to drill a few holes but it turned out really good and it is up off the floor and out of the way. I mounted the antenna on the roof just in front of the 3rd brake light and ran the wire under the seal and into the cab and then down to tuner under the seat. I ran the cable from the tuner to the radio under the carpet on the drivers side, just under the step molding. It turned out really good and I am happy with it. I will post pics tonight when I get home from work.

stock speakers

Thanks for the pics the install looks great. I spoke to the shop were I am getting the xm installed and I asked them about replacing the stock speakers and he recomended not too. I thought hat was weird. He said the stock ones are nice.

Doest the antenna leak or cause any problems at the car wash?

If i buy the infinity speakers do I need to install the crossover that comes with it or can I just replace the tweeter and the main part?

The folks that did my install said the used to wire thru the 3rd break light. They said they stopped cause they got compaints of leaks in the light housing.

This is where mine is. A bit closer run maybe too. Front drivers side.

If you get the Infinity speakers with the separate tweeter, you'll have to mount the cross-over somewhere. If you don't want to do that, you can get a set of the Infinity Reference 6800cf which have an adjustable tweeter on the main speaker (can turn it 350 degrees to point to the right spot). I put those in the rear doors of my truck. The front speakers are the Reference 6802cs.

I have Infinity 6x8's in my 01 along with an amplified 8" bazooka bass tube and kenwood cd player. It sounds pretty good for a $600 setup.
