K&N Filter fitment issues?

Sorry for the newbie post...

I have an '04 FX4 SCREW (5.4L) and according to the K&N site, their part # 33-2287 is supposed to fit. I ordered one ($32.95 from www.summitracing.com) and it simply didn't fit. The K&N filter seemed to be about 6mm wider and about 13mm shorter than the stock filter. Despite e-mailing K&N support and showing them photos displaying the differences, they insist this is the correct part number.

Has anyone else had fitment issues with this part number for their '04 5.4L trucks? I'm wondering if perhaps there was a slight airbox modification during the '04 production run.

Could you just get a razor blade and trim the rubber part down

Either way doesnt explain why its not fitting. I havent heard of this before though.

Post the pics showing the no fit. I’m curious to see.

I'll have to look at my Dad's in his truck. He probably still has the box too. He didn't mention any fitment issues and has had it in for the life of the truck 2-3k miles.

33-2287 is the correct filter, and should take about 5 seconds to install.

Maybe at the K&N packaging plant, someone stuffed the wrong filter in a 33-2287 box?????

Thanks all for the replies. I was beginning to think I'd gone totally silly (I know...short drive).

At this point I'm quite certain that the K&N 33-2287 box that I received must have had a different filter in the box. I've verified that K&N specs the filter to be 284mm x 214mm x 24mm. My original Ford filter is 285mm x 215mm x 34mm.

Obviously, I got hosed by a packaging snafu at K&N. A re-order is in my future...(although maybe not from Summit...)

Everybody makes mistakes. I'm sure Summit would make it right if you give them a chance.

Yea, Ditto with Summit. They are great. It's not their fault that K & N had a quality problem.
