ARRG Airraid and Check engine light

ok so last thursday I installed my new airraid intake on my 5.4 liter scab. With my superchips tuner on the 87 octane setting I noticed a nice performance increase. In addition I noticed the sound the intake now makes....which is awesome and definitely not annoying.

While I was extremely happy at first I ran into the check engine light problem on tuesday, 115 miles after the install. I was just sitting at a traffic light and the check engine light came on. I thought this sucks, but then thought maybe i didnt install it right cause it was semi dark out when I was installing.

Well after checking my install and clearing the error codes (left bank lean and right bank lean) I crossed my fingers and hoped it wouldnt happen again. Well within about 10-15 miles the light came on again (ironicly at the same traffic light).

This has left me pissed.

For others who had the same problem has airraid come up with any kind of fix for the problem or did they just say "it'll be out in a few months" ? I plan I putting the stock intake back on today and then calling airraid and seeing what they have to say but I thought I'd check here first.

eh, the search function is well and good, but if you can't remember the exact post you are looking for, you can have a hard time finding it unless you remember some exact wording in it...I remembered this one from the other week and still took me a couple of tries to find it.

Airraid

My 2004 Lariat Scab will be 1 year old this month. It has 18K on the clock now. Back when it just had 3000 miles I purchased the Airraid cold air intake. The performance and gas mileage improved immediately. But the SEL came on after about 4 days. I disconnected the battery and it would be OK for another three days. I was getting frustrated to no end. I was ready to send it back and put the stock unit back on. After 4 or 5 more lights. Ford told me that it was running too lean. It was getting way more air than the stock tube. It turns out, I wasn't allowing the PCM enough time to relearn the Air/Fuel ratio. I was told to disconnect the negative battery cable for 20 minutes. Turn the headlights on to drain residual current. Then reconnect cable, start and let idle for 15 minutes. After that, drive normally and everything should be back to normal. I hope this helps. Also be sure your fuel cap is tight. If Airraid redesigned the system, I don't understand why, mine works perfectly fine. Hoss

speedskier,
Can you post pics of the old and new Airaid tubes? I'm curious to see how much of a visible design difference there is.

Thanks!

Airraid

I don't get it -- How come my PCM compensated for the difference in the air/fuel ratio and yours wouldn't? Why would they redesign the tube? My truck runs strong with the original design. No "lights" since I first installed it in March.

I don't know why it causes problems on some and not others, it has something to do with the way the mass airflow sensor works, maybe there are slightly different depending on when the truck was manufactured.

Either way it was big enough of a problem for airraid to redesign the intake for us.

It seems a lot of the manufacturers were having the same problem like airforce one.

speedskier,

Does this newer intake tube have the same drone as the old ones?

How is it working for you in the past few weeks? Any CEL?

Thanks
Clay

Have the same problem with mine. Rechecked install, cleared codes (lean bank 1 and bank 2). Couple weeks later came on again. Lean bank 2. Cleared codes again with the 1714 and loosened and checked the seal on the airaid tube again. Couple weeks later, lean bank 2 again. It has the stock intake back on now and stock program. The airaid intake kit is now sitting in a box in the garage.

Thanks for the info.
How will the "new" tube replacement process work for people just now buying or ording the airraid systems?
Theres got to be alot of systems with the "old" tube in stock at distributors and dealers. Or, are all purchases actually drop shipped to the customer directly from airraid no matter where you order it from?
If thats the case, I guess airaid will swap out the tubes before it is shipped?
