Are the aftermarket third brake lights any better than the factory light. Such as the one from Recon or others.

I just went out and bought that Frost King weather stripping stuff. It is the "D" profile but has two rows, so I just seperated the rows and started applying it to the light. Let me try to post a pic so you can see it.

Where my finger is where they meet I put some rubber silicone so it wouldn't leak from there. I also put the meeting points at the bottom of the light facing the bed and not the top of the light by the roof just so water wouldn't find it's way in there.

Seeing how the dealer now has to worry about removing the water stains from the rear seat I'll let them fix it. I will however be watching very carefully to see it is done to my satisfaction.

I also have the 3rd brake light leak. I noticed it the other day when I was at work. I parked at an angle so the water was flowing toward the rear of the truck. When I got in, I saw where it was coming from. I bought some Clear RTV and applied it and since then, no more leaks. However, I noticed last night that now the brake light is blown...crap. Now I have to hassle with removing it again except this time I'm gonna get the weatherstripping.

BTW, mines an '06 SCREW with the power slider.

I figured I'd give an update on my leaking brakelight. Instead of going through the dealer and waiting on my truck, I purchased a new assembly. There is indeed a bigger/ better gasket on the newest version. I had a time removing the old one with the silicone, but it was a snap after that. The new light comes with the pigtail and connector, new bulbs and much improved gasket. I'm glad I did this because a huge storm happened yesterday and didn't have single drop inside the truck. It was the best MOD I've done so far......

Went through the carweash yesterday and noticed the dreaded brake light leak at it's best. Water pouring off of the headliner. I have read all the posts and will probably call Ford but may just fix it myself. My question is, can I get the brake light out with a cap installed? Never looked yet as it has been below zero for days. Thanks .

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed in this thread. Today was our first real rainy day since I bought the truck in late October, and apparently my 04 F150 has (had) a leak . Once I pulled the brake light off the truck it was clear where the water was coming in around the factory foam gasket. The rubber weatherstripping I replaced it with was much beefier than oem, but I guess the real test will come once I wash the truck tomorrow.

Now, if I can get the water stains out of my rear seat, I'll be extra happy.

Have a good one.

What about the headliner? I too have the leaking roof. I suspect the brake light, after reading this topic. My question is, since the headliner got wet, and mine looks stained, Does the dealership replace the headliner as part of the corrective acction?

If it’s warranty work they’ll make it right somehow, probably by cleaning it if it’s not to bad

I caught mine before it soaked the headliner, fixed it myself

I know Im reviving an old thread, but I got a question about this. For the people who used weather stripping, did you scrap the old gasket old and build a new one with the weather stripping or just lay it over the top of the factory gasket?

I scraped off the factory gasket and replaced it with the D molding from Home Depot. That was last year and it is still keeping a seal.

quick fix, 3M electrical sealing tape, ugly but works while wet, or at least until I can pull the shell back and fix it properly....
