Brake Light Leak
Got my first oil change today and they ended up keeping my truck because they ordered a new brake light assembly for me. I told them mine leaked bad and Ive read on forums that the seal was bad. They called me and told me I was right on with what I suspected.
They are replacing the whole 3rd brake like with new seal. If I find it to be shady work, I will try that Weatherseal stuff...
Im sure this should solve the problem...I just figured Id have them keep it since I live 2 blocks from the dealer...better I it gets fixed now before the rainy season...

A coupel weeks ago, after washing my truck, I discovered that I too have this problem of a leaking 3rd brake light. I removed the brake light and, like everyone else, found that the foam seal was not properly seated around the perimeter of the light (the top of the seal was way off).
So instead of wasting a day at the dealer, I just went down to my local Home Depot, and picked up some high quality rubber weatherseal (to be exact, it was Frost King "D" Profile X-Treme Rubber Weatherseal). I thoroughly cleaned/removed the old seal from the brake light, then applied the new stuff. I tested it out several times, and absolutely no leaks!!! I could tell just from looking at the difference in seals, that the rubber one that I installed would seal out water MUCH better than even a properly-installed factory seal would.

Well after the past week and over 5 inches of rain I did get a leak. The headliner was soaked at the back sliding window. It dripped on the rear seat top. I had to keep some towels on top until the rain quit and I could get to the repairs. I followed your lead and got the seal from Home Depot. The fix was a snap and I also made two small rubber o rings out of a radio chassis gromet to fit over the screws. Don't want a leak there too. I suppose you can get some very small o-rings at the hardware to do the same thing.
Now I am ready for the next rain storm. Hope we get some soon.
I brought mine to the dealer since it was close by...its been raining cats and dogs...no leak.
That Home Depot idea sounded like a great plan though if this didnt work. So far so good...if it ever leaks again, Im heading down there to get that stuff.

Mine does it too - I noticed it while going through a car wash. My mother-in-law (Of all people)
was sitting in the back seat, and it literally poured in on her.
Anyway, it goes in Monday. Thank god for my wet okole water proof seat covers!

Re: Leaking too...
Dealer replaced the gasket and in 30 minutes I was out of there .. Basically a new more robust gasket (probably like the home depot fix) ... hope its fixed ...

After 2 weeks of rain, I just noticed that there were water tracks on my rear sliding window. Upon further checking, my headliner was still wet.
BTW: I have a 2004 supercab F150 Lariat.
Called dealer, they say to bring it in and they will need it for one day.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but this really pisses me off. I have the third brake light leak as well. After it raining hard for the last week I heard a large amout of water running to the front right of my truck when I would come to a stop, I thought that maybe a draining tube was blocked. Then my gas gauge ( both the digital and the actual fuel gauge) stopped working. I took it right in and was told be my dealership that they could not even look at the gas gauges because they were backed up on electrical work due to replacing the cuise control problems that we have all read about. Then they called me and told me that it was not a blocked tube but a massive leak in the third brake light. They needed to pull the carpet out and dry it and replace the light. As many people that have had this problem i don't understand why they are not checking for it on the routine checkups. My truck has been at the dealership now for 36 business hours and tomorrow I feel that if it is not fixed they are going to give me a loaner one way or another. I hate my dealership and really don't like being anywhere around it. Pitty I'm spending way to much time there lately!
By the way this is the 4th problem where the dealership needed to kept my truck more than three days to fix the problem. I only have 11,000 miles on this truck, I love it but it is really starting to rub me the wrong way.
Well I am going to try to be calm but if worst comes to worst I can ues my favorite line from "Scent of a Woman" and say a few years ago I'd takin a flame thrower to this place!!! See how many people I can upset just for fun.
may not get me a loaner but may just make me feel better inside

Here’s a simple way to determine if you got a 3rd brake light leak in its early stages before it becomes
a big leak / big wet problem
TEST provided by: Quintin __ close all the windows; turn the blower on high/normal air/spray soapy water
around the 3rd brake light. Look for bubbles.

As you can see, I got the big wet problem brewing. It’s been raining hard nearly everyday and yesterday evening
it leaked big time.
After pulling the light off it was obvious why it was leaking. The foam gasket wasn’t applied straight across the top of the lenses and consequently less than half the width of the gasket was actually in position to make the seal.
I cleaned the foam gasket off the lenses assembly and ran a bead of Permatex clear RTV silicone in place of the gasket.

Discovered a leak this weekend in the same area you guys are talking about. My sister in law was riding in the rear and found it. Going to the dealer tomorrow to have it fixed. I have some other small issues to address, and I'll have them address any TB's for my 2004 F150 SuperCab. This site is so great!
I just joined the brake light water leak club

I hope your idea works, I'm swinging by Home Depot on the way home!
It doesn't appear my first post went so...
Well it doesn't look like enough of you who had the leak complained to Ford. I just took delivery of my '06 F-150 Spuercrew last weekend. While driving home from dinner last night it started to rain. Not any rain, it was almost tropical storm like with the driving wind and I think I even heard hail. Anyway, I noticed (or rather my daughters did since they were in the back seat) water dripping from along almost the entire rear edge of the headliner. So Ford must not think it is a big enough issue to warrant a design change. My question is, do I perform the fix myself or allow the dealer to? If I do it, I know it's done correctly. However, if I take it to the dealer, it's documented and any future issues, whether they be with the headliner, mold or electrical, will fall into the dealers lap. Keep in mind I JUST got this truck and it has less than 500 miles on it. Since it is a 2006 model though it's possible it has been on a dock or lot for quite some time now.
