3.55 -> 4.56 worth every penny
3.55 -> 4.56 worth every penny
For the past few weeks I have been running 35" tires on my 2004 4.6L with 3.55 gears. I finally had the ratio changed to 4.56 and I can not believe the difference. The truck actually feels like it had more power than it did when I ran stock tires. I was also only getting 13MPG with the 3.55.
I know regearing can be expensive, but if your running the 4.6L with oversize tires you really need to save up and change the gear ratio. Put the superchips tuner on hold, bite the bullet and get the gears.
Speaking of tuners
, and concerning my speedometer and shift points. Will the 1714 factor my gear ratio into both, or just the speedometer?

Sounds good! Are you 4x4 or 4x2?
Also I noticed you too are from SD... Where did you have the gear install done?
Once I get my 04 FX4 lifted on 37's, I think I will go with 5.13 gears... I love gearing! Was going to go from 3.27s on my Stang to 4.30's. Dont fear the GEAR!

somail,
What vendor did you use for the gears/brand? Also I am going to guess you are in a 4X4 as the 35" tires are not something I would see in a street tire. Unless its a 20"+ wheel.
Thanks for the info.

How much money are we talking about? I have the 4.6L with 33" tires on mine. Been looking for the next thing to do to it and this may be it. Who did you buy the gears from?
shane
Also, did it decrease your mileage? Was just talking to a friend and they said it would kill any and all gas mileage going to the higher gears...so is this a performance only mod?

In highway driving in theory, it will decrease your gas milage, but since you have the larger tires it MIGHT improve. In city driving you will see a increase. If it does decrease, its a mpg or so if that.

My truck is a 4x2 with a 6" fabtech lift. Since regearing I have not put enough miles on it yet to calculate my MPG, but I hope to improve enough so that the gears pay for themselves within a years time. The were not meant as a performance mod, but as a mod to save me money in the long run. I just really need to get a tuner so I can change the shift points.
For those who asked, I got the gears and everything else at a local vendor called border parts and had them installed at a shop which was highly recomended by a few places. The total cost came out to about $600. I had four shops give me quotes of $900+ for parts and labor, so I was very happy having everything comeout to $600.
