2004 ford oil cooler?
2004 ford oil cooler?
Hello,
I was wondering if the new 5.4L has any kind of a oil cooler built into it when you get the tow package? I noticed that the lower radiator hose goes in right next to the oil filter. Thanks for any info.
Wes.

I believe it does have a oil cooler and a tranny cooler if you get the towing group...my FX4 with the tow package has a cooler right in front of the radiator and then a smaller cooler underneath the fan shroud right in front of the skid plate, i assume that smaller one is a tranny cooler and the bigger one by the radiator is a oil cooler.

According to Ford.com, the tow package includes:
Trailer Tow Package $350.00
- Class IV Trailer Hitch Receiver
- 7-Pin Wiring Harness
- Heavy-Duty 72 Amp Battery
- Upgraded Radiator and Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler
- Optional Reverse Sensing System

I stand corrected...I didnt realize the power-steering oil had a radiator. And in my opinion there is no need for an oil cooler, Ford engineered the engine cooling system to be able to efficiently cool all 300 ponies I would assume.

So, What do you guys think of adding an engine oil cooler? Do you think it worth it or any disadvantages?
Thanks Wes

I think the engine cooler does a fine job.
I don't think the oil cooler will make much of a difference with this truck.
And when did they start putting rads on power steering?

My '97 had a power steering rad. It also had an engine oil cooler. The oil filter screwed onto it. Had 2 radiator hoses going to it, one supply and one return. I haven't looked at my 2004 yet.

Want to hear a funny one. My jr. salesman said the small radiator in front of the A/C condensor was for running the truck in limp mode. He said if the regular radiator blew a hole, the truck would run on 4 cylinders and the smaller front radiator would take the load
He is correct the truck will run in limp mode if it over heats but the smaller radiator in front is the secondary transmition cooler. Manufacturers run the transmission fluid through the radiator for two reasons. 1) to warm up the flood to get it to the preferred operating tempature faster. 2) to act as a cooler when the transmission is being worked hard.
Why Ford added the secondary cooler? Probably for the owners who bought the truck to work it hard... heavy off road and towing the toys...Another example of how Ford has built a truck to last many years.
The service manager I spoke to mentioned the power steering cooler is there because this is a heavy truck with rack and pinion steering. This combination creates a lot of heat and without it, we would see an increase in failures 5 to 10 years down the road. Another example of how Ford has built a truck to last many years.
Here's to you Ford

Sorry. I forgot to add my 2 cents about the oil cooler.
It's not needed. Ford has us running the synthetic blend oils in the F150s. The blends and full synthetic can take more heat than conventional oils. I can't remember the tempature ranges but rest assured, as long as you run what Ford recomends, you will not need an oil cooler.
Just remember to have the beer after you put the mods on your truck... never before or during
