Changing Instrument Cluster?

well, my dad is kinda regretting getting a truck with no tachometer on it. i know ive read about people changing out the instrument cluster with something like an FX4 or Lariat cluster with the tach. im curious though, how much does a new cluster cost? and also is it possible to take the part out that says FX4 or Lariat (dad doesnt want something the truck isnt)? last, how do you even change out the cluster? thanks for the help

Hey Dane...
It's been a while since I've been on the site. Was wondering if you still have that part number for the FX4 instrument cluster...finally got enought spare time (and money!!) to change the OE cluster out. My parts guy didn't think it was possible until I showed him your pics...Thanks!!

Hi Mark,
Glad to see you're back with us.
Sorry but I don't have the part number anymore. You could track it down on the older thread post here somewhere. Or, you can go to the parts department at you local Ford dealer.

If you want an instrument cluster like the ones in the SX4 and you're Truck has a column shift and not a console shift then go to the new truck lot and get the VIN from an SX4 truck that has the cluster like the one you want.

The parts department should be able to look up the part number for the SX4 cluster.

The mileage is programed into the cluster at the factory so you will need to give them the mileage reading on your truck.

I do remember that it cost me $381.00 installed. They will have to program the management system on your truck to tell it that the instrument cluster has been changed.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

An SX4 is the 2004 F150 4x4 truck.

The '04 STX does not have a tachometer in the factory instrument cluster.

I had the instrument cluster in my '04 STX replaced by a cluster for a SX4 instrument cluster.

You can see the one I posted on my personal web site home page. http://www.fordtruk.com/2004-f150.htm

I have a FX4 & would like to get the onboard milage calcular & miles to empty features I have seen on the Lariets. The question is could I buy a Lariet cluster and swap it out, if so where could I get one..how much. then I could sell the old one on e-bay if it worked..

k80-kid,

All of the instrument clusters are a dealer item. You have to order them through the parts department of you local Ford dealer parts department.

As to if the instrument cluster that you would like to have and if would work in your truck. You would also need to talk to you local Ford dealer service department.

Good Luck!
