Unable to add overhead DVD to rail system

When I purchased my 04 Lariat, the dealer didn't have any with DVD on the lot. They said that in a few months it would be available to be added at the dealership to any truck I bought. So I've checked in with the dealer occasionally, and this week they said that it can't be added. They say you can only get the DVD from the factory. They say the truck is not wired for power in the rail system and they are worried about liability issues arising from installation. The recommendation was to go to aftermarket products. I'm disappointed because I wanted the matching overhead module from Ford, but now will have to go to aftermarket. Anyone with similar experiences?

Thats crap, if you are somewhat handy, buy the module yourself and install it yourself, or have a audio shop put it in. I am sure some of the electrical savy ones in here can give better input, but I would assume all you do is run a lead from the radio fuse to the unit and an FM modulator or AUX input for the sound. You can definitely make it happen, even if Ford didnt put the little 12v wire up there.

Boy you're dealer really blows. DO a search on postings from rambunctious. He works for the peole who make the rail system. They are in the process of getting a retrofit wire kit approved by Ford. Any dealer who passes on the chance to install a few wires under a headliner in order to gain the sale of a what will probably be, according to my dealer a $3000.00 DVD system sucks.

Just my .02

Adam

B.T.W the cable from the DVD to the AUX on the radio, will assumably be proprietary.

I called my local dealer today about the Factory DVD. They said they would install it for 1250. The only stipulation was that they told me I must have the 6 disk changer.

there is now a "partial" harness available for 2005 trucks with audiophile. with that radio, part of the harness is there, running up the "B" pillar. this partial added harness completes the route to the dvd. I will try to post a part number tomorrow

unfortunately, the factory dvd won't work with an fm modulator as it is designed to communicate with the radio with what is called CANBuss.

we continue to make daily progress with ford to release the full harness for trucks without the partial harness or the new option for 2005 ordering "DVD prep kit" which gets the 12 wire harness in the headliner , hense "prepped" for the dvd

I have the accessoreis harness in my truck and we documented installing my DVD for the instruction sheets.

the price should be about $1200-1400.

as I confrm more I Will continue to post

Hey,

My dealer told me they can do it to my XLT even though I dont have the power rails installed. I guess some dealers just dont like liability or something.

Anyways for the $1600 or so they said it would cost, I think Id rather have my local shop install one in each headrest, and a flip down with the dvd player under the seat. It would cost me about the same and be a better setup. Plus Its all quality goods.

Im sorry but ford needs to re-think the pricing of the unit.

I am installing a Pioneer in-dash DVD and then moding a overhead storage bin to hold a 5.5in screen. It shouldn't be too difficult...a little cutting and some fiberglass and it will look factory and I will have about $250 in it (the overhead screen).

I just got done with my Alpine dvd system. In dash monitor, dvd player, headunit and XM. Why someone would want to pay for fords unit is beyond me. For the price of the ford stuff you can get better aftermarket. With the Alpine setup, everthing works off the one headunit.
