I need a new air filter...

I don't want to beat this air intake/filter thing to death, but I have 19,000 miles on my original filter and it needs to be changed. I was holding out for a K and N cold air intake or an Air force one but they are not out yet. Should I get the K and N drop in or a regular replacement filter and where can I pick one up? Thanks for the help.

K&N

The filter is out, but not the kit, I was also informed that the standalone filter will not work with the kit. So you'll be tossing about 35.00 out the window if you plan on getting K&N Kit when they come out. just a thought....

I am waiting on the K&N cold air intake also. I have 14000 miles on the truck. If the kit is not out before it needs to be changed then I will probably just get the paper ford filter or similar.

I understand the K&N filter is washable/reusable...so how do you maintain it? Any special stuff you need to maintain it or can you just wash it in mild soap and water and then blow it out?

You buy a "recharge" kit. There's a cleaner and an oiler included, along with step by step instructions.
Do not simply wash and blow off as it's an oil trap filter... you take away the oil and the filter doesn't work.

BigSherm,

It sounds like the K&N drop ins or the Green filters aren't any more expensive than the stock paper filters and should function better.
That's what I plan on getting after I get a couple more thousand miles on my truck (just under 10k miles now).
I was thinking about getting the AF1 intake when it's available, but I want to see some convincing information that they actually do provide measurable gains before I'd spring for that. It may very well be that the redesigned stock intake does a better job than on the previous generation of F150s and there might not be much room for improvement with an aftermarket intake. Time should tell.

the cost of a regular paper filter is peanuts.

just replace it until you are ready for the K&N.

Just looking at the truck you drive, I would assume that the cost of replacing a paper filter shouldn't be a problem

Having never used a K&N, what is the advantage to installing one?

$46.00 for a Ford (OEM disposable) air filter is PEANUTS???

A K&N that doesn't need replacing can be had for less than $40. Now that's peanuts, maybe even soybeans.

I know this is a little off topic, but I have to ask.

My dad has a 2004 Chevy 4X4.

He mentioned he has a reuseable filter (dont know what brand). From what I remember from our conversation he mentioned things that ieee_raider posted

Do not simply wash and blow off as it's an oil trap filter... you take away the oil and the filter doesn't work.

Anyone know what that one might be if the K&N isnt out yet?

Aren't there any after-market air filters from Fram or Purolator or someone?

Once disposable aftermarket OEM replacement filters become available, the price will be substantially less than the $46.00 that Ford is asking.
