dzervit, I'm with you 100%. Whether they save lives or not is another issue. Telling me what to do to protect myself is BS.

Here in Indiana you do not have to wear a seatbelt if you have truck license plates on your ride. This seems like a stupid loophole. The state spends millions of bucks to enforce an unnecessary law that you can get around by being a pickup driver.

I guess the main reason states have the seatbelt laws is so they are eligible for federal road money.

Sounds about right.

It's all about the money..NOT our safety.

I have heard many others complain about 'being forced' to wear seatbelts and I think I have a fair and equitable solution.

Those that believe use of seat belts prevent death/injury could continue to do so.

Those that don't want to wear seat belts shouldn't have to.

Why couldn't the insurance companies charge lower premiums to those that checked:
I will not be wearing a seat belt.
(I'm sure Ins companies could calculate how much savings that would be)

Then those people could pay for their own personal injury.

This would provide your personal freedom and still be fair to everybody.

It's easy to be a redneck.

To be a Cowboy...that's a whole different story. Takes a lot of hard work.

I just hope you stay away from becoming a "concrete cowboy" or "***** kicker"

Question

I am confused about how lying would work.
If they say they will wear them, they pay higher premiums.

If they say they won't, then personal injury is not covered.

Who would lie and why?

OH....sorry.

I misunderstood you.

I was thinking on simple terms.

example:

*If you check you WILL wear a seat belt, your personal injury is good to go, and premiums DONT go up.

*If you check you WILL NOT wear a seat belt, no personal injury coverage and your premiums will go up.

If that was the case...people will lie.

My bad.

OK.

My proposal would be like the way car insurance is now in regard to Liability Insurance and Collision.

In Virginia, Liability is mandatory and Collision is optional.

In that regard, if you want your personal injuries covered, you select 'Seat Belt Yes' and you pay that portion of insurance.

If you 'Seat Belt No' you don't pay for Personal Injury Insurance
because it is your right that no one should be telling you what to do. (and no one else pays for your decisions)

Nick, you are right on the money (no pun intended). Around 1985, the Federal government had all of the states impose a seatbelt law, and allowed it to be a ballot question on their next election. If 1/3 of all states maintained the law, that would be the end of the story. That did not happen, and in 1989, the Federal government forced automakers to install passive restraints in the form of automatic seatbelts or airbags. When auto seatbelts started decapitating people, it became all airbags. That wasn't enough for the insurance lobby, the Federal government than told all states they should have seatbelt laws. They really have no authority to do so, but they said they would be more favorable with highway funding if seatbelt laws were in place.
