fried CPU

dang. After 19700 miles, my computer checks out and truck stalls. The computer that controlls the throttle body fried...so much the for the drive by wire crap. They have to replace it all under warranty...and they provided me with an 04 XLTcrew cab. Not the same as my Lariat...but still..at least it is a truck.

Man, no love on this post. Maybe everyone read this post, froze in fear, and hit the Back button really quickly in hopes it was just a nightmare.

So you were just driving down the road, and the computer crapped out and you were done? Did the engine surge or leave the throttle plate open, or just die peacefully?

I am all for the advance in technology, but this drive-by-wire is getting a bit ridiculous. I think Ford got in a little over their head by putting it on the F-150.

Keep us updated on any more info you get.

Well, gee, that's not good news. I've never liked the idea of the drive-by-wire system. Thank goodness I have the 6 year or 100,000 mile extended warranty.

I have the 5 year 100k warranty, but I will probably be over 100k before 5 years. It stalled with the throttle closed. It still was strong enough to get me to the dealer. Its kind of funny ....the last 10 miles to the dealer it drove perfectly...

On the other hand...As long as they get it fixed...I still love this truck. I have had BMW's do the same thing, so I dont think I can blame it all on Ford. Since it has a computer that controls this stuff...There should be a way to Ctrl-Alt-Del it.

With very few exceptions nearly every Ford, Lincoln, Mercury will have DBW by 2006.

Computers crapping out is nothing new. I had one go out on a '93 Dodge van with less than 20K miles on it . It went out on a curve in heavy traffic and wouldn't even limp after that. Be thankful it at least got you on down the road.

First update:

I got it back right when the dealer closed today. 20 minutes later it died again. The dealer service center had already closed so I am in a dead truck. It finally started and limped me home. It goes back tomorrow.

Well, that ain't no damn good! Did they close the service ticket on it? If so, I believe they'll have to open a new one to try to fix it again. Keep track of how many attempts there are, and start investigating the Lemon Laws in your state.

Philip,

I'm sorry to hear the problem wasn't resolved. What did they do to repair it?
Was the part that had the problem the PCM...or is there another computerized unit involved?
Good luck in getting it properly fixed. Please keep us posted.

Thanks,
John

I should find out something later today. At least they put me in a 04 f-150 screw for a loaner. It is just frustrating waiting to get my truck back. If they dont fix it this time. I will as for a new truck..

2nd update:

The Ford dealer replaced the throttle sensor and so far all is good. I put about 50 miles on it today with out any problems. Actually it seems to have better acceleration and less throttle lag. So far so good. We will see what the next 80k miles brings.
