New brake pads

An Engineer at the company i work for owns an 03 Expy, he took it in to have warranty work done before his 36k miles is up. The tech at the Ford dealer told him they now have replacement disc brake pad that will eliminate the dust problem. So he is having them replaced at no cost.

That would be great, my wheels are filtyh and I'm sick of cleaning them! It only takes 200 miles of driving to get them really bad.

I just got my truck back from a 2 day stay at the Ford resort... all expences paid. The "rear end vibration" decided to start acting up again... but the mechanic couldn't duplicate the problem this time. Anyhow, the main reason for the visit was because my rear rotors were scored, pretty badly. They also said that the front brakes were making excessive noise.

So, for a fix, they turned all 4 rotors (I don't necessarily like that, but what can ya do) and replaced all 4 brake pads. I don't know the specific pads they used but they said "they are the best pads available that Ford makes". So I'll keep an eye out to see if the brake dust still accumulates. If not, I'll get the specifics on the pads and post the info.

Also, my tolerable "shimmy while braking" has disappeared.... go figure.

Shimmy while braking is typically caused by warped brake rotors. I had mine turned at about 10,000 miles. They have to started doing it again at 15,000 miles. Going to be a real pain having them turned every 5000 miles. At some point they'll be too thin and Ford will have to replace them.

i dont understand this, this almost sounds like the brake problems that ford had for the 89-97 thunderbirds/cougars. Warping rotors really fast. These trucks have pretty big brakes, and EBD, so why r the rotors and pads wearing out so fast? Hell my dad has 31k, almost 32k on his 02 LT silverado, and it is still on the original brakes from Jan. 02 when he bought it.

My Sport Trac I just traded in was horrible on brakes too. The front brake pads wore out at 16k miles. Then 7k later at 23k miles they were wearing out again and I could feel the shimmy too that the rotors were warped. I traded it in like that. They also produced brake dust too.

My new FX4 also is producing brake dust on the front rims.

Some engineers are only salespersons with a degree! Those are the ones that "earn" their engineering degree because their parents pay for it. Sounds like you found one, anaheim.
