5.4 oil change

For some reason my dipstick is impossible to read. The car is on level ground and off. I was wondering how much oil the truck holds with and without filter change. It is a 2004 F150 5.4 Triton 4x4. Someone help!!

I did the 2nd oil change myself at the 6000 mile interval. I changed the oil and filter, took 7 quarts of 5w20. Looking at the size of the Motorcraft oil filter, I would guess 6-1/2 quarts. Personally, I don't like changing the oil without changing the filter. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I put 6 quarts in as of now. Just trying to figure out the exact amount before I go any further. I usually change the filter out every other time. Any other info on how much oil the change should take w/out the filter on the 5.4 would be helpful. Thanks!

Lots of us change our own oil.....but since I only have 1861 miles on the odometer, I haven't done it yet. As soon as it hits 2000, then I will.

Here's what my owners manual says about oil capacity.

Engine oil (includes filter change)

Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor
Oil Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Super Premium
Motor Oil

4.6L engine 5.7L (6.0 quarts)
5.4L engine 6.6L (7.0 quarts)

You will probably find the same info on page 275 of your manual.

It does not give a capacity for "without" the filter.

There is a disclaimer that says:

Use of synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil is not mandatory. Engine oil need only meet the requirements of Ford specification
WSS-M2C153–H and the API Certification mark.

You could verify/check your dipstick calibration for accuracy. Park your truck on level ground. Drain your oil pan, put the plug back in or better yet replace the plug with a Fumoto drain valve, and remove the old filter and install a new one...do not add oil to the filter, install it dry.

Add enough oil to bring the oil level up to the low mark and record exactly how much oil you've poured in. If it nat at the add mark, you can make a new add mark on the back side of the stick with an electric engraver. Continue to add oil until it hits the high mark and record that amount and remark the stick if necessary.

Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then shut it off and let it sit for 1/2 to 1 hour so that the oil runs back into the pan. Check the oil level on the dipstick. Add enough oil to bring it back up to the full mark and record that amount. (this is how much oil the filter held)

You'll now know exactly how much oil is in the pan when your the oil level is on the add mark, you'll know exactly how much oil the filter holds, and you'll know exactly how much oil is in the pan when the oil level is at the full mark.

Reading Dipstick

The 2004 3valve 5.4 holds 7qt with a filter.
On the dipstick there are 2 holes separated by cris cross markings. The top hole is where you want your oil, that’s the MAX, a little less is OK too.
Clean oil is hard to see sometimes. The oil will fill the hole similar to a toy bubble wand.

Turn the stick so light reflects off the oil

I thought that is what that hole was for. Thanks....I just drove it up to the store with 6 quarts and am about to check it again. My guess is i will have to add .5 more quarts w/ out the filter change. Just wondering if anyone hs gone through this process yet to save me some time....Thanks all

Personally, I'd never change oil without changing the filter. You're leaving behind half a quart of the bad stuff.

As far as tips - get yourself one of the socket drive filter removal tools that fits over the flutes and remove the filter from the top.

Its infinitely easier than than trying to use a standard filter removal tool, as there is almost no room to use a standard wrench on this truck.

Second tip - wear Mechanix gloves when you remove the filter. There are all kinds of things down there just waiting to shred your knuckles.

I think you will find that if you change oil and filter and put 7 quarts in it will show somewhere inbetween min and max. There is no reason to add to the max line. Per the owners manual, as long as it isn't min or below it has enough. Adding to to the max is just using more oil you don't need.

Don't trust the dipstick to be dead-on accurate. Change your oil and filter, adding 7 quarts, run the engine, shut it down, let it set for a while. Then look and mark the dipstick where full really is.

Just changed my oil and filter Friday. Put in 7 quarts as per owner's manual. Oil level on dipstick on max.

Fumoto Valve

Is the F-106 the right part number for the Fumoto Valve?
Thanks.

According to the Fumoto web site the 106 is for the 5.4L. I believe that is the number I ordered for my 2001 a few years back.

I sure hope it is the right one. I removed the Fumoto from the 01 after it was wrecked and before the insurance co hauled it away. I had Fumoto send me a new gasket, and I am planning on installing it on the 04 at the first oil change.
