Retrax on today----Questions??

Finally put retrax cover on today,, pretty easy for most part--I added a couple of pics as well---

Question was how do you really do that 1/8" measuring left to right? I couldn't really figure that out--It is real cold so I figured I would really measure it out later, but is this real important as well? Does this keep water out, or does it allow it to move easier or what? Anybody who has done the measuring left to right please let me know---anyways, thanks for any help----I also have a Line X, and bought the gate gasket, but didn't put it on either because I couldn't really get it to stick good because there was not much sheet metal as well----do you just stick it as good as you can to the liner??

thanks for any help

I have the Retrax on a Screw with Line-X as well. I did not have to worry about the 1/8" play from side-to-side because there was no play at all....

I have the Gate Gasket too, but I have not attempted to put it on yet. I'm sure I'll be pondering the same thing you did "will it stick to the Line-X"...???

There was no room for any adjustment, so I'll say "yes" to your question.

jdpete,

It's not too hard to do the "side to side play" measurement. If you still have some problems after you sleep on it, we'll try to help you out with the instructions. As fatboy0103 said, my Retrax had less than 1/8" of side to side play when I installed it...then I re-checked after it felt broken in and it was at exactly 1/8"...so it seems to be fitted real well for the '04.

I did try to install the gate gasket with my Line-X. It's fairly hopeless. It might work if I put some extra 3M adhesive on there, but after a couple of months with the Retrax and no gate gasket, I don't feel like it's needed.

according to the instructions, if you have no play, you should cut some rubber from the rubber blocks----it says you should have 1/8" play both ways---that is my point, I figured most people didnt do all of this figuring on it---how important is it to do--seems like a pain, but if it is vital to sealing out water or dust, or vital to moving the cover, I will do it----For anybody who has one that they installed theirselves, did you all get all of these exactly, and if not, how well does yours work

thanks again,,,

jdpete,

The play that they call for is probably to try to keep the cover from binding when you open and close it. When I first installed mine, there was no play, then I tighted the clamps (pretty tight) until there was just under 1/8" of play.
Before you cut the rubber blocks, I'd say just make sure that the clamps are as tight as you can get 'em. If there's still no play, give it time to see if the cover loosens up as it breaks in...just don't try to force it too hard if it does start to bind somewhere. I would only carve the rubber blocks as a last resort.

John

I like that Retrax. Nice addition! What do those run for a 5.5' 04 screw? How far above the bed rails do the retrax rails extend? Noise opening and closing? Also, does it leak?

Hmmm. Im so tempted to order the retrax. Only thing stoppin me is the fact that its so shiny. A mat black finish woulda looked better in my opinion.

Im picky I know

about $850 off Jeff from previous posts----extends about 2" each way---little noise opening and closing-----easy to open---not guaranteed not to leak, but most say doesn't very much---if you want to take it off for moving furniture or something, it is held by four clamps, so in five minutes it is off--
