MPG - New Alltime Low

Well, With the 9 or so inches up here and the below zero temps; plus we're getting another 6 or so tonight, I have managed to get 7.16 mpg!

Ouch, that's almost a Quarter for every mile.

I'm letting my truck warm up 5-10 minutes every morning, driving in the snow and ice, in the city, and I'm STill getting 11. That's not great, but a lot better than 7. I swear there's something wrong with your truck.

Your truck is ill Yellow. You need to take it to the hospital soon.

After breakin was over I am probably getting at least 12 mpg running 4 high on snowy roads.

blitzkrieg, every time I see his pic I think the same thing. With all that snow and his tires wrapped in the stuff, his shiny new blazing yellow FX4 stands out like an inviting beacon in a desolate landscape.

I think you misunderstood bro - I was meaning that if its getting 7.x MPG, something is wrong.

Ouch, at 7 mpg I'd think something was definitely wrong. I'm seeing over 12 mpg now with nothing but short trips that all end with a trip up a road that looks like chocolate pudding...it's a gooey muddy mess. Admittedly, the temperatures here aren't like what you're seeing, but even when it was around 8° here I was getting 11+ mpg.

I have 1000 miles on my truck now, after four months, so you can guess that my truck is doing almost nothing but short trips that are mileage killers. If this truck can manage 12 mpg, I'd think yours ought to get something close, regardless of the weather unless you're pulling stumps with the truck for a living. I don't think I could get mine down to 7 mpg without really trying.

YellowFX4 - I've followed your MPG posts over the past few weeks, and I've got to say there is definitely something wrong with your truck. I would take it in to the dealer immediately.

With temps hovering around zero degrees here last week and some snow (used 4x4 for about 50 miles on last tank) I ended up with 13.50 MPG on my last tank. That was with a few warm-ups too. This tank (no 4x4, more reasonable temps), I'm averaging 15.2 MPG. OVerall, I've averaged 14.4 MPG during my first 2000 miles.

The worst I had was high 13's. And that was city driving and in 4x4 for about 70 miles.

Yellow, this may sound like a silly thought and no doubt you probably have already checked (or the Ford guys did) but my family had a Grand Cherokee that did the same thing, and it ended up that there was a small pressurizing leak somewhere in the fuel system. No one at the dealership could find it, but we noticed it because we left the car running for a 1/2 hour or so on our driveway (blacktop) and when we pulled out, there was a slight hole where the gas had eaten away some of our freshly laid blacktop. Perhaps if you parked your truck and let it run for quite a while (45 mins or so) and moved it you could check for a slight gas leak?

Just a thought.

OK

I will give that a shot, Wolfman. I don't know what else to try, to be honest. It's a LOVE-HATE relationship with this truck.

yellow, I would have to agree with some of the others. Take it to the dealer and at least let them check for codes. You could have a sensor going bad causing the bad mileage. 7mpg really seems out of the ball park a little.

Man, I got 9.5 MPG towing my boat to the Keys two weeks ago. That was a 6 hour trip doing about 70 MPH. The boat is about 5000 LBS all by itself, not including the fact that it had about 50 gallons of gas in it.

One other thought - looking at your truck made me think of it. I had a 99 SCAB which was averaging about 14-15 MPG, and I added a brushgoard / winch to the front. After that, I never got above 10 MPG. In discussing this with numerous people, they all concluded that the weight of the brushguard/winch combo (around 250 pounds) was the cause of the decrease in gas mileage. I have heard of many other people with this problem.
