Gas Cap Tether (Flareside)

Anyone else notice that the gas cap tether (at least on the flaresides) can be annoying? When the cap is removed it has to hang down, it can't go up. Then there is no place to put it, it wants to lay against the paint. Then when the pump nozzle is inserted the handle almost hits the cap.

I would rather have a cap that is not tethered. Then I can just set it up on the plastic bed rail. I've never looked for a replacement cap but I suppose someone must make one. For now suppose I could just snip the tether.

Just cut the tether. Unless you have a habit of leaving gas caps at the gas station.

Because if they didn't, there would be a different set of guys in this same thread talking about how they keep losing their gas caps and complaining about Ford being too cheap to put them on a tether

I did the same thing. My gas cap kept making small scratches on my paint, so I cut it off. Now I just lay the cap on my bed rail when I get gas. Just make darn sure you put it back on after you fill-up! I've never lost it yet...knock on wood.

I just spent two hours on the small area of paint located beneath my locking gas cap that has a tether...

Guys, do yourself a favor and cut the tether off!!!!!

If you're as **** as I am about my truck (and I know many of you are), don't allow the tether to stick around another day. My paint was seriously marred from repeated fuelings where the cap simply 'hung' there and moved, ever so slightly, from side to side.

I did manage to remove the majority of everything that was marred and visible under flouresent lighting however, I couldn't get it all with the products that I had available to me. I'm going to have to buy a more abrasive product (DACP) to take on the last little bit...

Take it from me... CLIP IT!

There is a notch on the inside of the fuel door for hanging the tether (cord) for the gas cap. I use it, it keeps the cap away from the pump handle and the paint.

fatboy,
Excellent tidbit of information! Thank you, I'll check it out.

Rockpick,
It sounds like you had a traumatic evening. First, finding the abrasions, then performing minor surgery on your beloved KR (snip!). I'm glad you were able to get most of the abrasions out already.

John

After the first couple of fill ups, I was ready to clip mine as well. Then I found the notch on the door. It works pretty good -- keeps the cap up and out of the way.

Because people would go nuts about the $25.00 Gas cap when they lose it. Also remember that cap is important for vapor control I.E the check engine lamp will come on with the wrong cap.

Did the late model F-150's have this?

JohnandDar...

HAHAHA! Yeah, it's just about gone but, I'm still going to have to put some more time into it and utilize my new Porter Cable...

RP,

As far as I know the earlier 97-03 f-150's did not have a place to hang the gas cap. Now the 04's might have it, I don't know. I think JohnandDar was talking about an 04.

Here is my solution works like a charm. Don't have to worry about scratches or losing the thing. I got the idea while putting gas in my GF's Civid which has a holder on the door...

Duuuuhh!!!

Talk about stoopid !

Or just plain old !!

I had thought about the tether thingy and it seems to always be in the way.

Then I read about the notch on the filler door.

*Thinks* .......

"I don't remember seeing that .... I'll go check !"

I WAS ALMOST STANDING UP WHEN I THOUGHT.....

"YOU BLEEDIN' EEJIT"

THE DAMN TRUCKS IN HOUSTON.....I'VE JUST GOT BACK TO THE UK....ONLY 5000 MILES AWAY.

(No smart remarks RP !!!!)
