I have the low profile Factory cool looking F-150 one and at 80mph the hood by the wipers does rise and shake a bit, but I figure as long as it doesnt cause damage it is worth it. I too live in the country and love the no bug effect.

I installed the EGR Carbon Fiber and luv all the compliments I get on my Shadow. It contours the hood/fenders perfectly and is totally vibration-free up to 90+. It's low profile, although it rises off the hood just enough to get a hand mitt under it for washing. I can't say it deflects every bug in my path, but it sure saved that soft aluminum hood from an acorn at 60 mph! That could have been an expensive fix w/o the shield.

I had on the Ford low profile and am having problems with hood vibrations. I took it off today and took it out on the highway. Hit 100 with very little movement. Will leave it off for a while and see what happens. I noticed on a very windy day at highway speeds with the deflector on, the back of the hood would move up and down about a quarter of an inch. I will let you know if removing it helps.

One of the first things I've always put on my trucks is a bug deflector, mainly to deflect rocks etc. It's saved the hood on our '99 Expedition many times, esp. with that extreme slope of a hood. However, the one that I put on my '04 lariat causes way too much vibration for me. I'm going to try and take it back to the truck accessory store tomorrow and see if they'll swap it for a low-profile, but I'm not holding out much hope.

LX4rickDe...that's the same as I paid, although it probably can be bought at less at some EGR retailers, but who cares about $20 plus or minus. Since it's going on a Shadow, you'll have the coolest shield possible on that color! You'll be very satisfied with the fit, quality, and appearance. Good choice!

Hey guys, I have to agree about the shield causing problems. My new LUND higher profile is now a fixture hanging on the wall of my shop.

I installed the LUND because that was the brand that I had on my last two trucks. However as soon as I had the truck up to highway speeds, I noticed a "wind bumping" from the driver side mirror and windshield post at any speed above 50 MPH.

Last week I removed it and the noise is now gone. I am SURE it was the shield. I am going to write LUND about it to see if they can maybe send me a different version

You can see the one I took off in this gallery:

Well, I have had the Ford low profile off for a day and no hood movement. It was also windy, which is when it was the worst with the bug shield. The only thing I can think of is that the shield was creating a low pressure area above the hood, causing it to move up and down at the back. Just like an airplane wing.

Here's another idea

Personally, after having several bug deflectors on several different Fords over the years, I decided I wanted something "different" to help me protect my front end. I'm not a big fan of the look of most bug deflectors (although the lower profile new deflectors look better) and to be honest, I don't think they work that well at doing what their name implies. On my '04 Lariat Screw, I had a protective film developed by 3M put on. It's marketed by a company called Xpel (and others so I'm told). Anyway, the film is put on like window tint film, is 8 mils thick on the painted surfaces and 40 mils thick on the headlight and foglights. It's guaranteed for 4 years against fading, tearing, etc. and is invisible beyond about 2 feet. Since my Lariat has painted surfaces on both the upper and lower bumper, I had the film installed on virtually the entire front end (excluding the fake chrome ring around the grill). On the hood and top of the front quarter panels, the film extends back 14 to 16 inches. Two months into it, I have absolutely no complaints...........even after accidently getting caught behind a truck carrying pea gravel on the freeway, there wasn't a nicked piece of film (and more importantly, the paint). It may not be for everybody, but in my case, it's the best thing going........especially after hearing about the hood shake issues associated with the deflectors.

Well, I heard back from Stampede regarding the hood shake problem. They are aware of the problem, and mentioned that much of the problem is due to the "Composite (fiberglass) hood". Is this true? I thought the hood was metal, just thin metal. I don't recall ever seeing anything on this forum or elsewhere regarding a fiberglass hood.

Anyway they assured me that my local dealer should swap it out for a low-profile model which will resolve the problem. I'll post when I have the low-profile installed and let you know the results.

The hoods are aluminum. I don't know where they got the "fiberglass" idea.

FWIW - I've had the Ford low profile hood deflector on for 2 months, with no problems at any speed.

Wedgewood-How Much

Wedgewood,

How much did the 3M film cost? I have been looking at it for my truck (if it ever gets here). Did you have any problems with air bubbles? Who did the install for you?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Steve

I have the low profile Ford bug shield and don't have any problems with it. I know what you are saying about hood shake, but my hood had movement before and after I installed the shield. Super Duty hoods shake as well at the trailing edge. I think it is because sheet aluminum isn't real strong and the hood has no support in the middle. It really doesn't bother me. There is some movement, but it is not excessive.

This has not been my experience with the Lund bugshield I had installed on my 04 scab. The hood does not shake at speeds in excess of 80 mph and there is no mirror vibration or unusual noise.

I haven't been able to find the receipt to check on the model of the Lund bugshield installed. However, it has an ususual profile at least in my experience. There is a "bump" in the middle of the screen that slopes off to the sides, where the profile drops even more as the ends of the shield extend over front fenders.
