Diesel

Read on another sight that Ford scrapped the plans for a diesel F150 and lost millions to Navistar for breach of contract. Anyone heard anything about this. I checked out the International website and didn't see anything, nothing on any news sites either.

I'm thinkin it's just a rumor, neither Ford nor International has any press releases about it anywhere...that I can find anyway.

My local dealership still says a V6 diesel should be available in the F-150 by 2006/2007, and the Ranger by 2010.

However, if you really want diesel in them, check out south america, you can get a ranger/f-150 in diesel there - because of different emissions laws and all that sort of stuff...

basically they scrapped it because Ford has deemed the 6.0 Powerstroke to be inferior to the 7.3 and is pissed that they had to buy trucks back bercause the engines sucked. Its a great engine as far as power and torque, but the quality is lacking. That coupled with the fact that the 4.5 Navistar proposed to Ford wouldn't meet 2007 emissions guidelines... meaning yet another new engine would need development for that time.

Many diesel makers are lining up saying that they would be willing to build a small diesel for Ford including Detroit Diesel and John Deere.

I think Ford should go back to Volvo truck (even though they dont own it, just the cars) and source from them. Or even have the Volvo car guys that make fantastic diesels for Eurpose build a light truck derivative.

I would love a light duty diesel F-150. a Cummins would be nice, but like it says in the article, Chrysler would discourage that. Detroit Deisel makes a good engine (they have my company's seals in them too!).

Diesel

I probably won't buy another 150 or any other half ton unless they come up witha viable diesel. The VW Toureg will have the option of a V10 diesel, I'm told, with 300 hp and 500+ ft lbs torque before long. And they tell me not in my 150, they can kiss my a$$, I won't buy another vehicle like it unless they start building what I want. I just find it ridiculous.

Funny how Ford likes to blame International for their problems with the diesel. Just because it is an International engine does not mean that its their fault. In fact International uses the same 6.0 in some of their medium duty trucks with no sign of problems like Ford is having.

Basically the problems boil down mostly to Ford's PCM (Powertrain Control Module, aka the engine management computer, the International versions have thier own) and the stiffer emissions controls placed on light duty trucks. There has been reflash after reflash of the PCM and some problems might get better but others get worse. In some of the reading I have done it seems that Ford is finally getting to the bottom of their problems with it.

As for a diesel in the F-150...I hope that Ford gets thier butt in gear and offers an I-6 or V-6 diesel engine. Word is that there is a V-6 version of the Duramax coming out soon that would go into half ton GM trucks.

the 4.0L Detroit Diesel engine mentioned in the article puts out only 235HP and 340 lb-ft TQ. I think we'd need a beefier engine than that. it should put out 300+ HP and mountain moving torque. you know GM is going have a kick *** Duramax when they get one in their 1500s.

as this is my first truck, I don't think I feel as strongly about it as Screwdriver, but I forsee the same future for me. I want a good diesel engine or I will buy elsewhere next time. I don't doubt that by the time my 04 conks out Ford will have this figured out.

I don't know if the half ton needs that much diesel... if you do you should really consider the SuperDuty.

It would be nice from a performance POV, but the reality is its not needed.

That and I dont think the F150 trannies could tolerate the torque.
