Speakers
BigJim......a simple setup would be to replace the door speakers with some good 6x8 coax's, get a quality head unit, and a small 4 ch. amp....You could install an enclosure with an 8" sub as well, and probably run everything from the single amp (tri-mode). You'd probably need a coil and 4 cap.'s to make it sound right too. A good stereo shop should be able to do that for you. All this stuff from ebay would probably cost anywhere from $600 & up installed depending on which pieces you buy. Build your own enclosure to save money.........it's easy.
SDS, Thanks!! That setup sounds like a little more than I need at THIS point in time. I think I want to just start with some speakers and add on to that later. Also, I am putting in a Pioneer Navsys-910DVD Navigation system (it's in transit right now
), so THAT will replace the head unit.
I found some speakers that LOOK pretty good and I've heard good things about them.

What do you think? Would I be able to just put these in the front doors and possibly add some to the back later? (BTW, I have a Supercrew)

BigJim, I was looking at those Kappas as well. The Audiophile System has a Component speaker setup and I'm not sure about getting COAX speakers because of the 1" Tweeter that is alraedy installed with a x-over (I assume).
Anyone have suggestions Component Speakers to replace the Audiophile setup?
Thanks!

I've been out speaker shopping as well. I have listened to a ton of speakers, including the Kappas you are referring to. In fact, I was ready to buy them at one point. In my opinion, while the sound is pretty clean, I think the overall bass projection suffers a little.
In the end, I went with two pair of MB Quart 5X7s that I picked up at Tweeter for a steal. Clearance for $70/pair. Very clean sound and better bass projection than the Kappas.
Another option I seriously considered were some Eclipse 5X7s that I heard at Car Toys. Very similar sound to the MB Quart, but the price was 2X as much.
If you're sold on the Infinity's, and I don't think that's a bad choice, shop around on the internet. I know that I've seen them for less than what Crutchfield is charging.

Do you have the Audiophile? I have it and I'm concerned about too much Bass.
Question for anyone:
Where is the Cross over done in the Audiophile? Is it at the Head Unit, or at the speakers? Is it adjustable?

The speakers I replaced my factories with were the Pioneer 880 4-Ways. They are GREAT sounding, add a lot of sound to the truck (scab), and were only 99 a pair at Best Buy. Install in the front is a breeze, I am just still trying to figure out how to access the rear speakers without destroying my truck. BigJim, I would certainly recommend these speakers, they dont need the hassle of an amp to make them sound good, as they are great on my factory head unit. The only other thing I am doing is adding a 60 watt powered sub under the seat. I dont need home-boy type bass (you all know what I mean), just something to make the system sound a bit better while I jam my George Strait! Anyways, since I have been going at this, I am glad to answer any questions any of you might have.
BigJim........those Kappas are probably alright, but Crutchfield is the most expensive place to buy. Etronics and Ebay are the places to buy car audio stuff. I'd still have to recommend a component setup in the front doors. Your lower left leg is positioned right over the speaker grill in these trucks, and that's gonna kill your high freq.'s.......a tweeter mounted in the higher alternate location solves this. Coax's in the rear doors should be fine tho'......that's what I'm going to do.
Thought I would keep all who are interested informed of my plans for a removable sub under my scab seat. I just received in the mail the Kenwood sub (here is the link for what I bought, http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...=0&cc=01&avf=N)
and it fits perfectly under the driver side rear-passenger seat. I am going to mount it by connecting two thick rubber straps to each seat pillar, thus strapping the sub into place. The sub has a removable remote control and wiring harness to provide all crossover and power functions, which I will tap into power / speaker inputs in the driver side door sill (thanks Red04), and run the remote cable to the fuse box and tap it into the radio fuse (to quash the need for removing the radio to look for the remote cable). The harness will come out of the carpet by the rear seat belt, so when it becomes necessary to remove the sub (when you need the storage space / flip up your seat) all you will have to do is unhook the two straps and unplug the sub. I think, for my application, it will work great, because sometimes on long trips I need all the space in the truck due to a fiancee and pet travelling with me. Anyways, I am still attempting to pull off the back grills to figure out which colored wires are the speaker wires, but hopefully will get it done this weekend. I will keep you all posted.

Hey SDS, with the set up you suggest, will you be using the stock amp and just install the component speaker with a cross over? Are you going to have to get a wiring harness as well to hook up to the stock wiring? Thanks
The setup I'm installing into my truck is a Kenwood X869 head unit, XR-61p components (6.5" mid, 1" tweeter) in the front doors, X688c 6x8 coax's in the rear doors, a RF HE4408 8" sub in the enclosure I built, and an X650D 5-channel amp driving it all. All Kenwood Excelon stuff except for the RF sub. The XR61's have a crossover that came with the speakers (component kit). The 5th channel on the amp is a class D mono amp running off the non-fading pre-out from the head unit to drive the sub, low pass filter is controlled fron the head unit. I'll string new speaker wire to all the speakers, and use pre-out patch cables from the head unit to the amp.
SDS, wow, your going for a full make over! I'm not looking to take it that far. Do you think just putting the component speakers in place of the stock ones would work? Yours should rock when your done!
Dupuis,
Components would work fine there without an external amp, the mounting is set for them but I recommend getting 6x8 components to negate the need to cut your trim up. The 6x8 components would fit with no modification. I will be installing a removable subwoofer underneath my rear seat for sound quality (not quantity) and will post my results once I finish (hopefully this weekend)

Yea, it's a full makeover, but it's pretty easy. Just buy the stuff & plug it all together. The most difficult part is pulling the amp power cable through the firewall, and getting the new speaker wire out to the doors. Pulling the seats out is time consuming but easy........after that it's just a matter of plugging it all together.
Replacing the door speakers will probably make an improvement if that's what you wanna do.

I'd be using these if I didn't already have the XR61's......
