Speakers
The front panels come off with little effort, just pull (I could do it with my hands, but had a putty knife handy) from the top down slowly. There is a mounting location for tweeters, ergo you could install a 6x8 component system in each of the front doors. You would run across the problem of trying to find a secure mounting location for the component crossover, but yes, in the front, a component system of 6x8 with a 1 inch or less tweeter is possible. I dont think it adds much sound quality compared to my Pioneer 4way 6x8s.
As for the back speaker grills, havent figured out a way to get those off, but when I do, the speaker wire back there will give me a good indicator on how to wire up the sub.

Got the audiophile in my Lariat SCrew and want to upgrade the sub to something a little beefier while retaining the stock enclosure...haven't taken it out yet though....Anyone know what size the sub is?....6.5"? 8"?...
Wolfman.......could you tell if there'd be much problem mounting a 6.5" round in the 6x8 holes in the front doors?.....I've got a Kenwood component set (XR-61p - 6.5" rounds & 1" tweeter) that I'd like to use if possible.
You will not be able to mount anything other than a 6x8 (or a 5x7 with mounting plates) without a major revamping of the door moldings (i.e. cutting huge chunks out). Ford placed the speakers into a sunken molding the exact size of the speakers. If you want the component speakers, get 6x8s from Crutchfield, they have a few good sets.
The front speaker cover panels were very easy to remove. On the top, you'll notice a little notch that you can insert a screwdriver to begin prying the cover away. Work your way around slowly to release the clips.
The front speaker is 6x8 exactly. The speaker harness can be found at Crutchfield at

There is a round plastic cover at the top that can pried out for a tweeter for a component speaker setup.
I don't know how to remove the back door panel yet from the SCrew. There are two small bolts at the bottom and the power window switch is housed in a small plastic assembly that can be pried off to reveal another bolt. Other than that, I don't know what I'm missing. Anyone get this off yet?

From what I've been reading, to remove the rear door panels, remove the upper window trim that should be held in with snap clips, remove the bottom two bolts, the bolt inside the window switch assembly and then the whole skin should slide upward and away. I'll try that in the next few days. When I removed the bolts, it did not want to pull out, but it may indeed slide up. I'll let you know how this works.
Got my plug adapter and faceplate today, and installed my stereo (Kenwood X869) tonight after work. Looks really good, and I've got my .mp3 capability back. Pulled the grills off the front doors too. I don't see much problem with mounting a 6.5" round in there. I'll have to dremel out the top and bottom a little, and make an adapter plate, but that'll be easy enough. Gonna mount a 1" tweeter in the round hole above too......getting my RF HE4408 sub tomorrow and will proceed with building my enclosure later this week......any clear instructions yet as to how to remove the rear door panels?......anyone interested in a Kenwood XW1025db 10" sub?.......how about a Kenwood KAC-649s 4-Ch. amp?.......I can't use them in this truck.
I don't know much about speakers or car audio so I just have a couple questions. I want to replace my speakers because quite frankly the sound sucks. I don't have the Audiophile system so I want SOME bass but I don't necessarily want a subwoofer at this time. What do you guys suggest?
Do I need 5x7's or 6x8's(I couldn't tell from the previous posts because some people had different opinions)?
What is a component system and do I need a subwoofer to use it?
Lastly, are there any systems or speakers that somebody who knows about this stuff would suggest? Oh yeah, I don't want to spend TOO much.
Thanks for the help guys. I learn a lot from this site.

BigJim.......I'm replacing everything. It depends on what you want to hear, and what you want to spend. Components are the best. Sub(s) cover your low freq.'s, mids cover the mid freq.'s, tweeters cover the highs. Range normally goes from 20 hz to 20,000 hz. Without a sub, you'll miss everything from around 5000 hz down. Coax speakers (multiple speakers on a single basket, often referred to as 2-ways or 3-ways) can't reproduce sounds as well because of the close proximity of the components that make up the speaker......you get a 'muddy' sound. A component setup, however, seperates the mid-woofer and tweeter so that the sound waves are also seperated, and provide more clarity.
