Rail vs Convoy ?
Hi all,
Been waiting on my new Screw to be built it seems like for months. It was produced on the 14th (thanks bigmac for tracking it for me) and according to my dealer it was shipped today by "convoy". He said not to read to much into that "Convoy" statement, but normally his MO trucks ship by rail to NC and then truck to Virginia. This truck had a 01 pority code, so I am hoping that "CONVOY" means TRUCK and means it will be here next week. Anyone have a clue about "Shipped by Convoy" and what that means as far as delivery time?

Yes, Convoy means truck shipment. They may be starting to do direct trucking (we have this off and on with our Norfolk trucks), or they may be taking it by Convoy to the railyard to load it to ship. Either way its released so you should have it in two weeks, probably less.
My vehicle had a Ship Date of 10/9/03, and my Dealer said it is supposed to arrive "the week of" 10/20.
Do they really know? I mean really, they are giving themselves a week buffer on the arrival date. I could've guestimated that within reason. UPS or FedEx can ship something via truck from Coast 2 Coast and tell you which "HOUR" it will arrive. This whole "ordering a truck and waiting for delivery" has been nothing but a big guessing game.
I've also seen folks post expected arrival weeks from their dealer and the vehicle ends up being there many days befor the dealer expected Arrival Date.
I ask ya again, do they really know?
If ya can't tell, I'm tired of waiting.....

No they don't really know. Too many people involved. All the trucking and rail companies are independant of Ford and most have Unions that make things even more complex. The ETA's are generaly rough guess +or- a week. Ours have been pretty close with the ones coming from the KC mixing center being accurate or arriving early and the ones from Chicago arriving late.
Well I am encouraged with the "Convoy" listing on the shipping. I know from experience that most of the time trucking is faster than trains. (more expensive but faster). So I am hopefull that my new ride is on a fast truck to Virginia.
The dealer said it normally took him at least 7 days to 21 days to get anything from the KC plant here in Virginia, but he said this afternoon it was rare to see the "convoy" deal. (he normally gets a train car number)
Also what I hear about "rail dust/dirt", make me feel that there may be other advantages to having a truck ship it. (other than bugs if your the first on on the top/front)
Anyway I appreciate everyone help so far. I will be sure to post pictures when I pickup my new....pickup !

Yes, convoy is better than rail unless you get lucky enough to get one backwards on the top as cleaning bugs off of a tailgates a royal pain (especially if they drop on the week end and let them bake for serveral days in the summer), and the other bad spot is right behind the trailer wheels on the bottom. This isn't that bad now, but in the snow and ice they get completely filled and it often takes a day or two in the shop to get them thawed. We had some trucks come by direct conovy out of Norfolk the last couple years and they were hauled by independants and took a lot more care when delivering, they coverd the sides of the transport so this wasn't a problem, but normally it makes a real mess. It cleans, but it's a lot of work.
Man I just hope that guy that drives the truck in the convoy who delivers to your dealer is NOT like the one I seen about 6 months ago at my Ford dealer.
This old boy was backing a truck off the trailer and freaking caved in the side of it. It looked like it was stuck so he was gassing it turning the wheel (no idea why he would turn the wheels while on the trailer) anyway BAM screwed the whole side of the NEW truck up…
Oh, he did get it off finally…
I am sure you won’t run into any problems…

I've only had one that had any major damage. I had a Mustang in 1999 that had some scatches on the back and a large dent in the rear quarter, we told them to load it back up and refused delivery. It ended up getting fixed and going to auction and Ford got us another Mustang to replace it. We've had others with a dent or scratch, but nothing too severe.
The best one we ever had was a 1997 Heavy Duty 3/4 4x4 that shifted during the transport. When he showed up it was cross wise with one tail light touching the side of the truck and the front almost touching on the other side. That guy could manuver a truck. It took him about 45 minutes of 1/2" movements, but he got it straightend out and off the transport with only the scratched lens that happened before he started mooving.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the info and input.
Hopefully by this time next week I can post pictures of my 2004 screw in the yard beside my 97 stepside supercab, thats the same color. out with the old and in with the new. ( I can't tell you the last time I was this excited about spending more than my first house cost.
) But anyway:
Talking about delivery stories, my saleman tells of the 65/66 Mustang that the transport driver totaled in the lot by falling off the top ramps, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CUSTOMER that WAS buying it....... and yes few weeks later he stayed at home when its replacement was delivered.
Thanks Again.
PS: If anyone see's a dark red screw on a truck headed towards VA, let me know

Hi again guys, Just wanted to give an update to the message above. As of yesterday ... NO TRUCK, So I guess convoy is not any faster than train.
I understand the logistics of shipping things, but mapquest says its ONLY 17 hours and 17 mins from MO to my dealer.
I am still hopeful my dealer will call me today or tomorrow with some good news.
Its so bad, I tried out the Zanio I got for the new truck on my 97 Herritage. (it did turn out nice)
My wife thinks I am crazy, but I know you guys know how I feel,
I want my new truck !
BTW I have finally posted pics of my present ride.
