Well, since you can only upgrade to 18's on the FX4, I say do it. THink about it, where else can you get 18" wheels and tires for $320? It just makes fiscal sense.

Well i ordered my loaded Fx4 with everything except the 18's because that was my concern to. The stock tire with 17's are P255/70/17. When u build the truck and pick 18 inch rims it MAKES u switch to the 3.73 rear end with 275/65/18,which makes me believe it is to compensate for the bigger tire & rims. So im going to say yes it would hurt the power and mileage compared to having a 3.73 with 17's instead of the 3.73's with 18's. If ure looking for the best mileage go with the 3.55's and the 17's. I ordered mine with 3.73's and the 17's to hopefully get some more zip out of the truck, and plus it picks the truck up a grand in its maximum towing capabilities (4x4) Hope this helps.

This thread hit on an important issue. We notice wheel and tire weight a lot in the world of MR2 fanatics because the cars do not have much power and are so light to begin with. People have posted a .5 to a 1.6 second drop in quarter mile times when going from 14 and 15 inch factory wheels to the 17 inch wheels that look so good on the car. Several factors come into play:
(1) Larger diameter tires means fewer engine RPM for a given speed - just like a lowered final drive ratio.
(2) More weight to spin up
(3) More unsprung weight outside the control of your suspension.

Just wondering in anyone knows, are the 18' wheels on the F150 supposed to be sold with the 3.73 rear end?

I have a Lariat (18 inch wheels ) and the 3.55. With this much weight it could use the lower gear ratio. It is a big enough deal to me that I am going to begin researching changing out the final drive gears. With the factory four speed ( wish Ford had the resources to crank out a 5 speed auto this year ) this truck could use a little help.

The 18" rims are supposed to be mated to the 3.73 rear in order achieve a final drive ratio similar to having 17" rims and the 3.55 rear.

Does anyone know if tires for 18" rims are harder to find than for 17" rims? Are tires for 18" rims more expensive?

I would prefer the 18" rims because I like the styling better and I also think it helps to fill up those enormous wheel wells. Price and availability of replacement tires is the only reason I can think of to stick with the 17" rims.

Any ideas?

Tire selection currently is skim for the 18" rims. Pretty decent for 17" rims depending on what size you want.

If you plan to keep the stock tires/rims, go for the 18" rims. Otherwise, the 17" rims can afford larger and better tire options right now.

Sorry to be argumentative, but my Lariat has 18" wheels and a 3.55 LS rear end.

Im sure u do have a lariat with 3.55s with a 4x2. If u go build a lariat 4x4 it only lets u get a 3.73 rear end. And the lariat comes standard with 18 inch wheels

can someone post a pic or link to a gallery that shows a good shot of the 17" wheels? I have 18's on my lariat, obviously, and as mentioned above, the tire selection for the 18's is slim. I am thinking of going to the 17's later on. not sure if they look the same as my 18's though. the aftermarket will eventually catch up with thenew bolt pattern, but I am still not sure if there will be much that i like. thanks.
