Beyond being just plain cool, the Tonka is also rolling test bed for many other ideas that I hope Ford will allow to trickle down to their production trucks.

Here a couple of detail shots that allow you to see the wheels and tires a little better. They were custom paterned after the toy Tonka. I like the proportions of this tire -- a little on the taller than wider side. While I have neve seen photos of it, the chrome piece on the rocker panel is supposed to open to form a step. Looking at the grab handles on the doors, it makes me think it wouldn't be all that hard to fab (or have it done) something similar for the new 150.

BFG standard, Goodyear ATS is the optional LT tire.

Not according to the order guide I have seen. 275/65R18 is the only size used on 18" rims on 4wd models, P rated or LT rated. 2wd = 256/60R18, but I don't know what tire it is.

OEM tires are real interesting , but I would rather hear from and share idea with those considering going aftermarket. C'mon, there has to be a few members with plans for tricking out their '04 F-150!

A few ideas can been seen here: http://wheelpros.com/default.cfm

If the '04 XLT with the Daystar lift posted earlier in this thread is any indication, then I don't think the 35 x 12.5s will be a problem. If those are the Nitto Terra Grappler size I think they are, then they are close to 35" (34.88") and are 13"+ in width. They claim "no rub" with that setup, so unless the FX4 or Lariat wheel lip moldings are a problem (and I suspect they aren't), then 35s look very do-able.

What was interesting to me, was how little the suspension had to be altered, in order to fit those 34 x 13 x 18 Nitto tires. If the information is correct, than just a 3" lift in front (spacers was suggested as the method of lifting) and leave the rear end alone. Pretty cool effect, with not much effort or all that much in added costs, beyond the aftermarket wheels and tires. I also noticed how much less important the wheel lip moldings are, when the wheel wells are stuffed. Might even have to remove them on FX4s and Lariats, should someone have a clearance problem going too oversized.

As we have discussed earlier in this thread, taller tires will effect the throttle response and towing capabilities. Anyone running bigger and heavier than stock wheels and tires will notice the effect raising the center of gravity has on handling, as well the extra braking load required on this increased unsprung weight. But no denying it, the new F-150 looks awesome with more rubber underneath it -- which makes the tradeoffs worthwhile in my book.

All that said, I'll bet you could get by with out doing a gear change. The stock Lariat LT 275/65 18 tire is speced at 32.1" (x 10.83") vs. the stated 34" for the Nitto pictured above. I dunno which particular Nitto tire is on the pictured truck, but my choice would be their Terra Grappler AT, which they offer in 325/65 18 (34.88" x 12.99"), 325/60 18 (32.99" x 12.83"), or maybe even their 325/60 20 (35.4" x 12.8"). Interesting to note on the Terra Grappler, the load rating is a D (stock is c). See more info here: http://www.nittotire.com/tire_ntterragrappler_sizes.asp

Another tire consideration for me, would be a Toyo Open Country A/T in 325/60 20 (35.4" x 12.8) or the non-metric sized 38x15.50 /18 M/T. See them here: http://www.toyo.com/tires/index_frame.html. The B.F. Goodrich A/T or M/Ts are still quality tires worth considering IMO. The also make an intersting more streetable (but pricier) g-Force TA KDW, that was shown on a Hummer H2 in an LT325/55 22 size (36.1" x 12.8"). A set of Weld wheel Phat Monsters with 5 tires in a package were priced at $8350. See: http://www.teakatoys.com/html/22_inc...er_wheels.html

After looking at what is currently available on the tire market, the tires on the F-350 Tonka show truck -- that I thought we so outrageous just last year -- which are custom carved Goodyear 315/60 22s (36.9" x 12.4), aren't quite as mind blowing now. Son of Tonka is looking more do-able.

What do those Nitto tires run? How about the Toyo's? I also like the rims in the toyo link.

Since the photo is not close enough to really see which Nitto tires are on it and we are left to guess on the exact size, here is a pricing page from Discount Tire's web site on Nitto tires for both the Terra Grappler AT and Extreme Force SUV tires. Note how much the prices jump from 16" to 18" to 20" -- ouch!

Here is a link to '04 F-150 specific wheel info found on Ford Truck World.

I stopped by a Ford dealer today and saw an XLT 4x4 fitted with 305/45/22 Falken S/TZ-04 tires and custom wheels (not sure of the mfg). It didn't look like they would rub and they did not stick out much (maybe an inch or so) beyond the edge of the wheelwell.

No offense intended geo -- just my personal opinion here... and knowing taste is a subjective thing, etc.. I gotta tell ya, I did not like the way that combination looked on the truck -- at all! Yeah, maybe it would be cool on a slammed two wheel drive, but to me, it just looks like crap on a 4x4. IMHO, way too much rim and way too little sidewall just doesn't fit well with the 4x4 aesthetic. YMMV.

Here is another online resource for wheels and tires that some may find of interest: http://www.onlinetires.com/main.html

Thumbing through an offroad mag at the grocery store this weekend and saw a great ad for Terra Grapplers -- sweeeeettt looking rubber!! Yup, that TG equipped lifted truck posted earlier in the thread is definitely more my taste, than is the MacDaddy low profile rolling 4x4 FX4 I saw today.
