FX4 ... worth it?

Just like many others, I am currently evaluating and pricing an '04 f150. At the moment, I seem to have it narrowed down to either the XLT or the FX4. But it looks like I can option the XLT up to the FX4 fairly easily for about the same price (XLT at 29043 invoice, FX4 at 29434)

So... what makes the FX4 worthy of it's own catagory? Am i missing something? is something different in the suspension? Will it drive the same? Thanks in advance.

You cannot get the floor shifter on an XLT, only on FX4 and Lariat, if that's what you had in mind.

Also, in my case, the FX4 is the only configuration that will have the Yellow/Dark Shadow Grey 2 Tone Paint scheme.

I'm not sure if the suspension is any different...???

Oh yeah, one more thing that made the FX4 my choice is the interior color, in particular, the dash with the brushed metal look.
You can't get this look (Interior/Exterior) on an XLT.

Hope this helps you decide.

MSRP of my pre-ordered truck is $39,740
I paid $34,893 Delivered (This is $200 above Invoice)

I got every option availabe, I think...

FX4 SCrew

between the two (XLT and FX4) I woul have to go with the FX4. I test drove a XLT SCab 4x2 about a week ago and didn't care for the dash (especially the gauge cluster) at all...it looked kinda cheap....and the sticker on that thing was 30,xxx which was kind of shocking!). I haven't seen the FX4 interior in person...but from the pics I've seen of it...it looks 10x better.

I ordered a Lariat SCrew 4x4 with everything but rail system (moon roof instead) back in may....and so far (especially after seeing some of interior components of the XLT) I haven't been sorry for that choice.

It's really just a matter of preference. I realized last week that they're about the same price, mainly because most of the stuff that is an option on the XLT is standard on the FX4. But, I wanted captain's chairs and Wedgewood Blue. Can't get the blue on the FX4 and the captain's chairs come with floor shifter on FX4. A feature I do not want. Those two things outweighed my FX4 wants for the cool looking bumper, grill and 18" wheels. I'm a big guy and am not a fan of the floor shifter console resting against my leg. Plus I don't like the look and feel of the floor shifter.

I've sat in both an XLT and an FX4 and, in my mind, FX4 is the winner... hands down. The dash is nothing less than awesome with the black, silver and carbon fiber trim. The one I sat in had the sport cloth interior (black) and it is SWEET. Don't get me wrong the tan interior I saw in the XLT is really nice... but it's just your basic truck look. The FX4 gets my vote. I liked it so much I went home and crunched some numbers and ordered mine the next day (I got leather interior though). I was planning on getting one anyway, but when I acually saw one in person... it just put me over the edge. I would suggest waiting until you can actually see them up close and compare them before making the decision. It's a lot of money no matter how you shake it and it's worth the wait to get what you want.

Just my opinion, though!

Option wise being equal, I hear that the interior quality of materials is significantly higher for the FX4. The FX4 18" rims look better than the XLT offerrings. I recommend test driving them both before deciding.

Not everyone needs 4x4 also. I think I'll do fine with the limited slip rear.

I optioned myself right into Fx4, (I don't remember which item made the Fx4 a requirement) but don't want the floor shifter. Anyone know if I can get the bench seats without the floor shifter? I am used to my currently available seating/space in the cab.

Well, let's hope Mr.McFeely is comparing Apples to Apples.
XLT 4X4 to FX4 4X4

You really can't make the comparisons with regard to pricing unless your comparing 2 similar vehicles, be it 2 Fords or Ford and another maker with similar options, the big one being 4X2 or 4X4.

The bench seat on all models comes with the tree shifter. Only captain's chairs come with the floor shifter. So, FX4 with cloth bench seat = column shifter as well as Lariat w/ bench.

I bought a SC FX4 4X4 two weeks ago and have loved it every second I have had it. It has black leather sport captains' chairs, floor shift, towing package and the 18" machined aluminum wheels. In my opinion, apart from the towing package, these are the features that set the FX4 apart from any other truck out there. I could have gone with the Lariat (for an additional 2 grand or so), but feel like the FX4 better suits my needs and lifestyle. Still, I do understand the feelings of some posters who are more comfortable with the tried and true. One other thing, I'm a pretty good size man too (6'3'' and 230 lbs). These seats are so wide and supportive, I coucln't ask for anything more. Man, I love this truck!

This is a different comparison than I've been running into. I originally thought FX4 was going to be a big seller, but 90% of the people I've priced to are now going Lariat. In my opinion the FX4 is too close to Lariat in price for the equipment diference. I've got these 2 trucks do in:

Granted, there are differences between these two trucks, but the are COMPAREABLE. Given the price difference, I'd rather have the Lariat with Auto A/C, Steering wheel cotrols, trip computer, Leather, etc. (but I will acknoledge this FX4 has a few things over the Lariat, but as I said most people I've priced to have switched to Lariat. I just feel the FX4 is about $700 more than it should be.

Thank you for the replies.

From what I'm reading, if I don't want the floor shifter (which I don't, it felt cheap and crowded my 6'6" 280lb frame) then it
s all about the look/feel of the dash and seats. Everything else is basically the same.

Yes, I want 4x4, I live in the northeast, and in the winter a 4x2 with limited slip isn't quite enough to get you moving reliably in the snow. Plus I hope to see a fair amount of non-paved recreation.

I'll probably be ordering this weekend, but maybe they will have one on the lot or on the way that will be close enough to be worth buying.

Thanks a lot fellas. After reading this the past week, I am updating my order from and XLT to an FX4. Now I just have to hope that my dealer doesn't NOW get the VIN number before I update it. Then I may have a problem.

I was born to be a 10%er I guess. After seeing the above comparesons, I went and triied to build two Trucks exactly the same. I built my FX4 how I wanted it, and then tried built the Lariat exactly like it. What I ended up with had a price diff of (MSRP = $35,355.00 vs $36,535.00) or about $800.

but I encountered a couple of problems with the Lariat. I couldn't get true blue, - it made me get med metalic blue with two tone, and the second color was arizona beige. (yuk)

Step bars and tires are also very limited with the Lariat.
So for the $800 dif, I would get the leather seats, and bright 18 alum wheels, but must also get the two tone paint in colors I don't like.

I think I will stick with the FX4 in True Blue, Black cloth seats, 17" machined wheels, and black tubular step bars.
Anyone who wants a two tone Truck, may as well pay the $800 and get the leather seats, 18" bright wheels, and flat step bars.
