a question on incentives

Not necessarily in regards to the 04, but incentives in general.

Do rebates and such ever get the sell price below the dealers invoice?

In other words, if I have a dealer saying that he can sell me a truck for invoice, is it worth holding out a few months to see what incentives Ford comes out with?

Thanks,
David

Sure they do. If you negotiate buying for invoice and there's a rebate, deduct it from your negotiated price.

David if the dealer is telling you he will sell you an '03 at invoice then of course he will as there is already a $3000 manufacturer rebate on the '03 and he will keep it.

You should get that truck for $3000 under invoice.

I believe all of the '03s will be long gone before you see rebates on the '04s.

The answer to your question is no. Just go find the one you want and be willing to walk away if you can't get it at invoice. Or just pay the price and be happy - cause you only need one.

They've already got us beat. Like Vegas, the odds are already in the house's favor. Its their house.

Forget that rebates are anything more than marketing tactics. They help the dealer up his profit.

Take a class on negotiation. Everything the other side gives you, real or perceived, is leverage for them to get something back from you in return. The rebate is a "free gift".

The best leverage we have as consumers is our silence and willingness to walk out that door. You lived without the truck yesterday. What's a few more weeks?

The less you tell them about what you want the less they can use as leverage against you.

They have this wonderful truck you want so bad.

You have this wonderful pile of money they need real bad.

Enough said.

Ketch - no disrespect intended, but that is incorrect (if I am reading you correctly). Raoul is right

The factory incentives are deducted from the dealer's sales price. Generally the money then is reimbursed to the dealer, but this varies by State law. For example, you might agree to buy an 03 Heritage for $500 over Dealer's Invoice of say $21,000, but then walk out the door for $18,500 after the application of a $3,000 rebate. (All these numbers are made up for illustration)

My advice would be to use Edmunds.com

Edmund's site now provides incentive deductions after the True Market Value. The TMV is the price their research shows the average buyer is purchasing the vehicle for.

Thanks.

That basically answers my questions.

And according to edmunds.com, the TMV for an 03 Lariat 4x Supercrew is $30,810 which is about 1800 less then invoice.

Regards,
David

Yes you can get a truck for under invoice. Everyone is willing to make a deal on a 03 truck right now. Not sure if it is possible for an 04, but I do remember several people posting on this site that they ordered the 04 right around invoice price, with the understanding that they would also get any rebates if Ford offered them at the time of delivery. Also, on the 03 if you take the rebate you cannot get the 0%. I looked at alot of trucks this past weekend but never got really serious with price except for one and they would not give me both the rebate and the 0%. They would have to have made me one heck of a deal in order for me to cancel my 04 order, but didn't.

As a side note, the Ford dealer I went to had about 75 SCrews on the lot that they where trying to move.

Happy to report I just drove a new screw, solid black with Tan interior. Walked into the salesmans office and asked him to build and price one for me (I had the Forddirect build & price sheet in my hand). He put the thing together, showed me the sheet and said 37225 is the sticker and 32568 is what we want for the truck. I had the X plan pin in my pocket but never brought it up because he went right to invoice with no haggling. Eric Hermann at Joe Machens Ford Truck Center in Columbia. TOld me he would call me with the buidl date and any other updates as they became available.

Black / AZ Beige
4 x 4
3.73 LS
Trailer Tow pkg
Dest & Deliv.

I also get to take the $400 rebate for recent college grad since I bypassed the X-plan. ( I knew going back to get that Masters Degree would pay off somehow)

X-Plan price is BELOW invoice.

If I read your post correctly, you just passed on additional money saved. WHY?

You are right my friend but the X-plan is such a small savings that I benefitted by not using it. Check the Forddirect website to build an X-Plan vehicle and you will find that X-plan is less than a hundred dollars lower than invoice , but you can not use the recent college grad rebate with the X-Plan or some of the other incentives like American Quarter Horse Memeber rebate in conjunction with the X - Plan either. So it made much more sense for me to go invoice, and collect the $400 rebate.

Invoice - 32568 Less 400 Rebate 32168

X- Plan - 32551 no rebate 32551

My only point was that these guys are eager to sell, and if you have somebody holding out for much above invoice, walk.

Don't talk rebate, trade, or anything other than sale price until it is established. Most dealers will try and keep the rebates or raise their asking price then take off your trade to get to the price you want.

It should work like this if you are at a good dealer.

1) Find selling price (invoice to 300 over isn't too bad)
2) Minus any and all rebates
3) Minus Trade

4) Final sales price

Remember, although you really want the truck act like you are prepared to walk and be ready to walk. There are a lot of Ford dealers out there who will treat you right you just have to find them.

BTW, My dealer, 100 over invoice - Any Rebates - Trade/Cash down (I sold two of my trades on my on. Really good auctions close to home) = My cost. I know that when I walk in. He knows he gets a sale no haggling. Bought my last three vehicles this way and it makes for a pleasent experience.
