Sad story of a '99 4.6
Back about 2005 or 2006, when I was still a Trooper, before retirement was a wreck I got called to on I-81 North bound in the afternoon. It was a big weekend for college age kids going home after school for summer, Va. Tech south of us, lots of NB college kids headed north. Traffic bumper to bumper at 60-70 mph, knew it was gonna happen, just was hoping to get to 10-42 before it did, but no such luck.
So it was after lunch that this call came in. Get to scene, no injuries of consequence but it involved a green Volvo sitting on the left shoulder next to a bank, it had an up side down red F-150 sitting on top of it, was also a Versa just in front of the Volvo with minimal damage to the rear. I talk to kids, Versa slowed for traffic ahead that was slowing for unknown reason, Volvo was slowing and then Volvo driver went to the grass off the left to avoid Versa, but Versa driver also went to the grass to not hit something else. Volvo just lightly hit the Versa.
The red F-150 was behind the Volvo, he saw the traffic slowing, he too went to the left shoulder or grass, but he went further left to miss the Volvo, and he climbed a small bank, maybe 6-8 feet high at the top, but he was kind of climbing the bank's side, which caused the F-150 to roll over to the right, it came to rest on top of the Volvo, up side down. The kid driving it was able to crawl out the back glass with some help, all of his "stuff" from college that was in the bed was scattered.
Like I said, no body was hurt. I noticed the engine of the up side down F150 was still running, kid wanted to crawl in to shut it off. I know that it likely had been running for 20-30 minutes before I got there, I called a wrecker from near exit to pull it up the bank off the Volvo, and another for the Volvo. The kid told me through tears that the F-150 had been his grand dad's who left it to him in his will. By the time the wrecker got there and cleared a path to the upper side of the bank and got hooked to the pick up, that 4.6 had been running at idle for 45 minutes at least, then it just went "ka-plunk" as it locked up. Boy cried, but truck was already totaled. His grand dad had taught him to drive in that F-150. He was really attached to it.
Oh well, was a first for me. Thought some of you would enjoy reading of the '99 4.6 that refused to go quietly.
