I put new brakes on the boat trailer, noticed the reverse solenoid wasn't working as well as the right turn signal. Tested the trailer itself and was OK. I than tested the 7 and 4 way connector from the truck and noticed I was not getting a signal from my test light. I than traced the wiring back to another connector above the spare tire. Removed the spare tire, unplugged the harness and tested there. I was getting all turn signals/running lights/reverse etc. there. So the problem lies within the harness. Today I removed the harness (FORD Part # YL34 13A576 C321A) This harness attaches to the connector above the spare tire and feeds the trucks rear lights as well as the 7 and 4 way trailer connections in the rear. I for the life of me cannot find that part number online. Maybe someone has a specific website I could try? My alternative is to find a new trailer wiring harness that splits the connector above the spare tire, however I would have to leave the old wiring in there so the trucks rear lights stay active. I noticed cracking, exposed wire and flattening in the existing harness. I would prefer to just replace the whole thing.
The truck is a 2002 F150 4x4 with factory tow package.
Thank you for the reply glc. That is very close to what I am looking for. Your solution will work just fine if I save the wiring in the red circle, and remove the wiring and pins from the wires under the X. Which I will probably end up doing. Also, I wanted to keep the 4 pin due to random trailers I tow, including one that I own. However that is not necessary if I carry an adapter in my truck. I'd like to stick the stock harness back in there. I may be wishing for too much, it seems tough to find. If I cannot find it by tomorrow, I'll be installing what you sent me in the link.
You are correct, it appears that is exactly what I need. Unfortunately, it looks like it is out of stock and discontinued. My truck must be gettin' old. I'll try to the wrecking yard tomorrow. Might get lucky.
Fbird, I thought about that too. I found the pins ford uses. They are called Wedgelock pins apparently. I would just need to get some wire, pins and I'll be good to go. The wire looked ok until the connector at the rear of the truck. There, I found that it had somehow become flattened and it was very brittle. The insulation just flaked right off due to heat and old age I am assuming. One of the wires only had a few strands hanging on. I have already removed the pins from the connector housing. I think I will end up getting the aftermarket harness just to get up and going quickly. Just for fun, I'll repair the factory harness in my spare time.
