Hello, as the title states it won't start on it's own. If I jump it, it starts.
-Battery replaced.
-Ground cable off battery was loose. repaired that and have 12v on the cables.
-Cleaned the terminals and connectors to the battery to remove corrosion.

In the cab it makes a slow clicking noise from the fuse panel and the cab light and instrument panel blinks on and off with the clicking sound, I checked all fuses in the boxes in the cab and under the hood.

I assume by it starting fine from a jump there is no issue with the starter? Is that a bad assumption? I also assume that since it starts it's not an anti theft problem or a key problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Run a jumper cable from a fresh, clean spot on the engine to the negative side of the battery. If it starts, you have a bad ground or the ground strap from the engine to the frame connection is bad.

 

Also make sure the cable contact at the starter is clean.

 

Clean the connections down at the starter and make sure the ground strap isn't corroded through.

 

If cleaning the above mentioned connections don't work. Have you tested the "new" battery....it may have a defective cell. where it will show 12v but when but to a load it falls flat.

 

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try cleaning the starter cables and update. Also I have 12v at the starter solenoid but no start when jumping those posts. Could be bad I suppose.

 

Thanks for all the help folks. Turned out the battery and the starter solenoid were bad. Unlucky coincidence I guess but running now. Thanks again.

Make sure the truck will not move, block the wheels, emergency brake, in park, etc . . .

Sounds like you are not getting power to the starter. I say this because you can bypass the switch and it will start so i will guess that it is a power supply problem and not a ground.

See if you have power going to the starter with the key in the crank position. Have someone turn the ignition as if you were trying to start your truck and see if power is getting to your starter. If not go to the ignition switch and see if power is coming out of the power wire that connects to the starter, if not, move to the power side and see if power is coming into the switch which supplies the power for the crank position. If not, start moving backwards until you find where your problem is.

 

Ahem - refer to post #8, the problem was found and fixed.

 

Ahem, Obviously that was not up when I posted my reply but thanks for pointing out the obvious. My reply was how to troubleshoot the problem and he would have found it. That is what is important. Maybe someone else will read it and see how easy it is to troubleshoot a starter on any car, just do it the way i described.
