Plasti Dip

Has anyone plasti dipped their stock rims? Got any pics?

I'm considering doing this on my black FX-4 because the clearcoat is failing on 3 of my wheels.

Well... I couldn't wait long enough, so I dipped my wheels anyway.

What do you guys think?

My eBay wheel is still in good shape.

The factory clearcoat is getting hazy.

I didn't bother masking. The overspray lifts off...

did you uses the glossifier or just go with the flat black. I was think of doing the gray portion of the stock rims in glossed black for contrast. Ideas?

Wow that looks REALLY good. I am thinking of doing that to my new wheels when they get here, just paint the inside lines:

Thanks guys. It was a pretty cheap way to know what my truck will look like if I ever want to powdercoat. Does anyone know if this stuff will grey in the sun without a top coat, or is it good to go as-is?

Nope, flat. I saw the glossifier on the shelf, but I was afraid it would make the finish too glossy. According to the can, the more you spray, the shinier it gets, topping out somewhere between a gloss and satin.

Just the inside would be sweet. The heritage rim is up there with FX-4 on my list of favorites.

You will find that they will lose their shine over a month or so. Then they become a very flat black. At that point you may consider a few light coats of gloss.

I like way the wheels look now. Should I just go ahead and spray the glossifier now to maintain the finish?

Not sure if that would help? I personally have not used the glossifier. But I have used plastidip on wheels and other things and know that it will fade in a short time to a real flat black. Right now, they have that powder coating look. That will go away

I pd'd my wiper cowl almost 3 years ago and it has faded a little bit, but my lower valence i did about a year almost 2 years ago and it is still black as the day i sprayed it. So if the piece isn't in direct sunlight it more than likely won't fade and also plastidip has changed over the years with UV protection and resistance to fading.

They don't horribly fade. But that nice rich color will go away. Mine are 2 months old. Here are some before and after pics the day I plasti dipped mine. Nice bright/flattish black look. The last pic is a pic I took today. You can see how much it has faded in 2 months. If my wifes car was here I would show you the grill. It is pretty flat, much more than my rims. I did the grill about 2 years ago maybe. Both of our cars are kept outside.

I removed my tires and did the back side as well being you can see through these rims so much. LOTS of light coats. I used one can per rim.

Before and after on the Day I sprayed them 2 months ago

I still love the look of them over the traditional wheels they were to begin with. But I liked the rich look of them more when they were fresh.

you can actually use clear coat over them to retain that fresh look, it will however make it a bit harder to remove.

That doesn't seem too bad, but it has lost that rich black color... especially being only 2 months old. Guess I'll spray some glossifier now and see where that gets me.
