Turn Signals stop flashing when brake is depressed 1997 f150 4x4
I changed the multi-switch. This didn't change anything. Makes no sence. They work fine till you hit the brake pedal. All fuses are good.
Well yes it does make sense.
There is either a bad ground or a bulb is shorted.
The turn signal uses the same bulb 'section' as the stop light function. They are one and the same. Just operated selectively by the multifunction switch for turn signal operation.
The point most often missed is the bulbs internal filaments for running and stop/turn uses a common ground 'within the bulb' hence a three terminal bulb. Two button terminals and a shell ground.
Forgetting this or not realizing it causes confusion in thinking.
Good luck.

I checked all the ground straps and ran a wire all the way to the back of the truck from the negative on the battery. I tied it into the ground on my trailer plug-in that was grounded to the frame. I have yet to ever use this trailer plug in, as I have never hauled a trailer. It was pretty rusted out where it was grounded. I previosly looked at all the bulbs up close and personal and they were fine. No cracked filaments. I mean took them out of the housings and checked them. So your saying run a ground up to the tail lights and put into where the bulb plugs in and see if it works? that's what I'm getting from ya.
Well I didn't tell you to run any wire.
You know the factory system worked as designed so now there is an issue to be found.
The circuits are straight battery and ground.
If there is poor grounding you will have the effects you see.
As I understand it your turn signals work either side until you press the brake then they stop.
In what way do they stop?
What is supposed to happen is the side that is flashing does not get the brake signal because the multifunction switch is controlling it to the flash circuit while the other side continues to light up as a stop light in the normal way.
..
If the flashing side gets brake signal it will light up as a stop normally would.
Or the flash stops and no light takes place.
Which is it?
Good luck.

I had ran that wire long before I posted on here. Yes, they work on both sides until the brake is depressed. It doesnt matter which direction your turning. The dash turn signal indicators both are lit when the brake pedal is pressed. The flashing side is getting brake signal and lights up like a stop normally would. thanks for the help.
If your trying to power more signal lights from the stock circuit it's a no-no.
The flasher won't work at the specified flash rate if at all.
A trailer plug uses a separate fused relay supply.
If no trailer hookup you need a separate controller with it's own fused supply and 'signaling' off the stock wiring.
Good luck.

It is an off-road with a stock trailer plug-in. I was wrong on one thing. The dash indicator light only stays on in the direction your turning not both like I stated above. I had also noticed a non-ford plug in on the brake light sensor. It seems suspect. I bought this truck a couple months ago and am trying to figure out someone elses "engineering". lol The front end wont lock in either... I just keep tinkering. I belive them to be un-related but it's one of those things... Thanks for your help.
Respectfully your trying to get us involved in some one else's mess.
We cannot possibly be of much help on something we or you don't know what was done with.
Our thinking is based on stock wiring and operations.
Remove butcher wiring where possible and go at it the correct way.
Learn how the front drive is supposed to work then trouble shoot from that point.
Obviously the last owner was a hack artist such that he understood very little then you buy his mess when it got so far out of line for him.
Begin to clean up the mess and you have a chance to get a decent working truck instead of trying to go on the mess..
Good luck.

Yes I would look for blue or red quick connects around UR rear light wiring harness. Without the proper kit u will end up with feedback thru the wires and a tail light, turn signal mess. Any not original connections will probably have to go first. If U have no unusual wiring problems then the multifunction switch or 4 ways may be to blame. 4 way system feeds thru the turn signal system, brake light system.
