Vin L may have NPI Heads

Jbrew:
Check this out: http://www.therangerstation.com/Maga...0/Ford_4-6.htm

From above site:

PI Heads:

The PI heads weren’t installed on everything in 1999, and the parts books aren’t clear about exactly where they were used, so there’s a lot of confusion about which applications came with or without them. The only thing anyone knows for sure is that all the Mustangs had "PI" heads in 1999 and some of the trucks and Expeditions had them. In 2001, the F150 and Crown Victoria 4.6 Ls received the PI package.

Still hoping they might be the right ones...... have $800 invested.

More on PI

Jbrew:

See the article below. They say 4.6L did not get PI 2001 and that there was a lot of confusion with Windsor heads. Still hoping that my Vin L Winsor motor has NPI heads.
I got $800 invested in the new heads.
In another post I saw stated the PI is stamped above the exhaust.... but did not tell me exactly where to look........... do you know where to find the stamp?.

Thanks for your help. I read some more and it looks like you are correct and I should have not doubted your posts.
Now the dilemma of keeping them and finding a NPI intake (do I need both upper and lower?) or reselling the heads and taking a loss.
Thanks again.

The PI/non-PI issue is a lot cloudier with the 4.6 than it is with the 5.4. If you have a 2000 model year F-150 with a 5.4, it's PI, guaranteed.

Decision Time

Guys:
Well, I just checked ebay for cost of new intakes upper and lower. They both can be had for $120 so if this is all I need, then I should probably keep the new heads I have in the garage........ they are brand new, not rebuilt.
I am 66 years old and don't care about HP or speed. This is a project truck to keep me from getting senile.
Can you guys tell me for sure if I only need these two intakes and nothing else except new gaskets?
Thanks again for your help.

Your going to have an aluminum intake then vs the composite (Black plastic looking intake) intake you have now. Sooo, yea, you'll need gaskets for a 98 model; from the lower to the plenum (TB elbow).

Careful, - in 99, the F150's had Aluminum PI manifolds which is about the same as you have now, only aluminum with PI ports. The 97/98 F150 intakes were non-PI. To make it more confusing lol, as I said before there's a few Ford models that used the non PI aluminum intake up until 2000 or 2001. Those were the vans and F250's.

Been wanting to mention this to sorta cover my **** lol, - it's possible that someone may have installed an older engine in your truck for some reason. That's IF your not the original owner.
Just take a look at your intake. The 2000 model year was the first year for the composite (plastic looking) intake. So, if by chance you have an aluminum one, - somethings NOT RIGHT here lol.

Anyway, that will confirm it.

I just read over everything, but I haven't seen anything positively identifying your engine as a Ford 330 5.4L engine. Guess you better confirm that before you get a bunch of useless info, - a little late for that, if you have the 4.6L right.

Here's the numbers PI vs NonPI for the 5.4L

98 (NonPI) =

At the Fly Wheel:

Horsepower: 235 @ 4250 RPM
Torque: 335 @ 3000 RPM
__________________________________________________ ____

99 (PI) =

At the Fly Wheel:

Horsepower: 260 @ 4500 RPM
Torque: 350 @ 2500 RPM

__________________________________________________ ________

I know I'm probably missing some things. When you torque it down, follow 98 spec. With the aluminum manifold, you can shorten the ground strap (cab -intake) Your radio rectifiers/ suppressors may mount differently as well. Not a big deal. Just make absolutely sure you get 98 intake gaskets. Just a thought, but it may be a PITA finding the correct intake gaskets. Ford moved the alignment pins around from year to year, so that's going to fun, - unless you get lucky. You'll need a new IAC gasket lol.

Lets see what else lol, - Oh yea, replace the O-rings in the heater core hardline while you have it apart. They WILL leak in the near future if you don't. I mean, the chances are real good. The bad in that is that you have to pull the manifold again to fix it. So new O-rings should be installed on the water pump stem. There's two. If it's already been leaking there, - you need to do a heater hose modification, -cut and splice. I can show you how to do that one if need be, I documented one I've done. But it's important! IMO anyway.

Hello, VGABBOTT!!!

I was using you awesome highly detailed instructions, but it seems just recently the BOX link is no longer active with files. They have been extremely helpfully for me and I can't find another write up like it.

I was hoping if you still have them they could be posted back up or emailed to me. My email is stephenhobdy@gmail.com

That would be much appreciated
THANK YOU!
