4.6/5.4 Cylinder Head Replacement Instructions

I am replacing the heads on my 2000 F150 4wd Short Bed.
Purchased a head package that came with the attached, detailed factory instructions.
I had previously looked for instructions but did not find any that were near this detailed.
I thought the forum would like to have it.

Those are also 97/98 instructions. Probably close enough, but the heads are different on the 2000 model years. In case you weren't aware.

Yea I believe just the ports are different on the 2000. Those instructions should work for yuh, - for the most part.

Look at ebay #400470429846

It is the same casting as my new ones and they say it fits 1998 -2004 5.4.

Head Compatibility

Based on this article, my truck is a VIN L and the F75E 6090 C20A heads will work. What do you think?

info from article

r Magazine, Babcox Publication)

Q. Does anyone know how the 1997-’99 Ford 4.6L and 5.4L cylinder heads can be identified, and does it have something to do with the intake manifold gasket? I have even seen two different heads on the same engine that have the same casting number.

A. If you’re talking about the Windsor applications, we extend our deepest sympathies. Why? Because there are a number of different right answers. The Windsor Plant production cylinder head in question is F75E 6090 C20A. It was used on the 4.6L, 1997-1999, SOHC, VIN 6 engines, primarily in the Expedition, light-duty F-Series trucks and E-Series van vehicle applications. The casting was also used in some 1996 and early 1997 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis models. All 4.6L applications came from the factory with the intake gasket alignment pin holes below the intake ports or "inside the rubber gasket," as noted in Ford’s parts information.

That same casting was used on the 5.4L, 1997-’99 NPI (non-power improved) SOHC VIN L engines in the Expedition, F-Series truck and E-Series van, both light-duty and super-duty. The 1997 5.4L cylinder head had the intake manifold alignment pin holes below the ports, identical to the 4.6L. In 1998 and 1999 the NPI 5.4L intake gasket pin alignment holes were moved above the intake ports or "outside the rubber gasket" as noted in Ford parts information.

No, that's for a 97/98 which is a non-PI motor. You have a 2000 which is a PI engine in the F150's.

You can tell by the smaller round ports it's non - pi. Your manifold won't bolt up right.

Babcox is a good source but your misinterpreting stuff or drawing the wrong conclusion anyway, - that's all. The F150's had specific engines.

97-98 = Non-PI

99-04 = PI

Yea, the Vans, Expy's, F250/F350 all had non PI for quite awhile after the F150 went PI. I'm not sure what uses those heads still in 2004 ?
I think the Vans E150's had those heads the longest. Maybe to 04 ? I'm not sure what the cut-off date was for the vans.

It's easy to get confused lol.

Yea those heads belong on certain 5.4L engines; just not the 2000 F150.

You COULD use them, but you'll either need a 97/98 Intake manifold to go with, OR adapters.

But you'll be giving up some power.

If you google Image Ford Non PI and Ford PI heads, you'll find/see the differences right off.

Now there's some Crazy Cats on the Mustang forums that combined the two engines, but I don't think I've ever heard of someone using non PI heads on a PI engine.

Hoping for the Best Outcome

Well, I will have to wait to take the old ones off. My truck is Vin L which is what the article refers that Vin L motors will have NPI heads. Truck was mfg 10/99 and the new heads were mfg 5/99. Hoping for the best here.

When I go to parts store for heads for 2000 yr, they show the F75E-6090-C20A as one of 4 choices.

How positive are you guys?

ONLY the 4.6's. Not the 5.4's. No waiting about it, I told you what you got, - before going thru the trouble lol.

That's alright, you'll see.

Babs has more articles from Engine builders Mag about everything I mentioned. They're out there.

Good Luck.
